Creativity and Innovation
by Tammy Stephens
Each month we will devote this colum in our newsletter to how PODetc Courses help educators meet the standards The International Society of Technology Education has developed National Education Technology Standards.
This month we will be examining the standard Creativity and Innovation. The standard states: Teachers use their knowledge of subject matter, teaching and learning, and technology to facilitate experiences that advance student learning, creativity, and innovation in both face-to-face and virtual environments. Teachers: a. promote, support, and model creative and innovative thinking and inventiveness. b. engage students in exploring real-world issues and solving authentic problems using digital tools and resources. c. promote student reflection using collaborative tools to reveal and clarify students' conceptual understanding and thinking, planning, and creative processes. d. model collaborative knowledge construction by engaging in learning with students, colleagues, and others in face-to-face and virtual environments.
In the course we study through readings and in-depth discussion what are the components of creativity and innovation really are. For example the article, Six Myths of Creativity the author states, "People are most creative when they care about their work and they're stretching their skills. If the challenge is far beyond their skill level, they tend to get frustrated; if it's far below their skill level, they tend to get bored. Leaders need to strike the right balance". This idea is further supported by The Apple Classrooms of Tomorrow (ACOT Research) and is depicted in the following graph:

In addition to deeply reflecting and discussing what instructional components are necessary to create a classroom environment that fosters creativity and innovation, participants collaboratively explore online Web 2.0 tools such as social bookmarking and mind mapping tools, to foster these skills. Participants also work throughout the course to develop a lesson plan that supports this standard which is peer reviewed by others in the course.
Our next Creativity and Innovation Course starts February 22nd. The deadline to register is February 15th. More information about the course is available on at the PODetc website. Participants can take the course for 1 graduate credit through the University of Green Bay.
