Focus on the ISTE NETS Standards
by Tammy Stephens

The International Society of Technology Education has developed National Education Technology Standards for Students. Each month we will devote this column in our newsletterISTE NETS Standards to how PODetc Courses help educators meet these standards.

The ISTE NETS Standards have six strands. In our Introduction to Instructional Technology in the Classroom Course we give an overview to the standards. The purpose of the course is to provide students with a "virtual sandbox" in which to try and play with new online applications and methods of teaching that meet the standards.

This three week course is team-taught by three of our instructors. Module 1 is taught by Tammy Stephens. In this module we look at new and emerging technologies that help foster creativity and innovation. We also look at sources of online tutorials that teachers can use to improve their own use of technology operations and concepts.

Module 2 is taught by David Fontaine. In this module teachers learn how to use Skype to communicate and collaborate with others in the course. We also learn about digital citizenship.

Module 3 is taught by Dr. Victoria Lovejoy. In this module teachers learn about critical thinking, problem-solving and work as a group to improve our research & information fluency skills.

The course can be taken for 1 graduate credit accredited by the University of Green Bay. However, we also have an introductory offer in which participants can take the course for non-credit for $80. We do this so that educators can try an online course to see if they enjoy learning online with others. All comfort levels with technology are invited to participate in this course.

Our next course starts November 30th. The deadline to register is November 23rd. More information about the course is available on at the PODetc website.
New Mile Guide from Partnership for 21st Century Skills

MILE GuideIn our consulting work we are often asked by school districts how they can incorporate 21st century skills into their curriculum.

The Partnership for 21st Century Skills has just released the new Mile Guide. It is definitely worth downloading. The guide gives you guidance on how to generate support for 21st century skills among stakeholders in your district, how to set benchmarks and goals, generate successful grant applications, and ensure continuous progress.

There is also a self-assessment for school districts on how well they are implementing 21st century skills.
