Tuesday, September 6, 2011 The Islamic Challenge Part II Jesus says in Matthew 24:12, "Because iniquity (lawlessness) abounds, the love of many shall wax cold." The Northern Region of Ghana is the heart of Islam in the sense that many of the towns and villages have become dominated by the Muslims. In a country that is predominantly Christian, Islam is making a huge move beginning in the rural areas and encroaching upon the cities. Small mosques are abundant. Larger mosques are being built. Muslims are producing more children than the Christians. And the laws of the land are starting to be ignored by the Islamists as they tighten their grip, especially in the rural areas. I traveled to the Islamic area from the capital city of Accra, a 15 hour trip by bus. Unlike other areas of Ghana, traveling into the Islamic region requires extra measures of security. Our baggage was searched and we were frisked by armed guard. The armed guard, carrying an AK-47 with two loaded clips taped together for fast changing when the first clip is spent, had a single seat in the middle of the bus. He was checking for weapons during his search because of the threat of an armed plant on the bus who would stop the bus along the way and meet up with other armed robbers about two-thirds of the way there. After the midway point, we stopped along the road. The security man got off the bus and organized about 20 other vehicles to travel in convoy through the Islamic dominated area into Tamale, our destination. Traveling in convoy prevents the armed gangs of Fulani Islamists and their accomplices from stopping a single bus at a time and robbing or killing the passengers. The Fulani tribesmen are nomadic herders. They are considered terrorists by governments across Africa. A week before coming to Ghana, the Fulanis slaughtered eight Christians in a small village in neighboring Nigeria. They killed 500 Christians in March. By day, they emerge from the bush herding their cattle, selling their products. In the night, they select villages to bring under the control of Islam. They are generally rural villages where they can move in, commit armed robbery, rape the women and kill any man who resists. They terrorize the citizens, and disappear so deep into the bush that neither the police nor the military can effectively bring them to justice. Eventually, out of fear, the villagers submit to Islam and the nomadic Fulani move on to their next area. Here is the kicker that is also true: In the absence of love (the love of Christ), lawlessness abounds. Have a Blessed and Powerful Day!
