Sydney Writers' Festival double bill brings a touch of Hollywood glamour to its first out of season event for 2011.
 | Annie Proulx |
In a year where not one but two films on Marilyn Monroe are released, Scottish Literary sensation Andrew O'Hagan returns to Sydney to share an unusual insight into this fated starlet's life. The Life and Opinions of Maf the Dog, and of his friend Marilyn Monroe is a unique, fictional peek into the life of this fascinating icon through the eyes of Maf, her beloved dog gifted to the famous siren by Frank Sinatra. Maf witnesses the rise of American's new liberalism, civil rights, the space race and the New York critic's circle. This is a fascinating take on one of the most extraordinary periods of the twentieth century.
Annie Proulx has delighted fans with her award winning novels including The Shipping News and Brokeback Mountain both of which were adapted for the silver screen. Both the stories and film versions won a litany of awards, further consolidating Proulx's reputation as a one of America's finest writers. Bird Cloud is Proulx's first non-fiction book in more than twenty years.
