Welcome to the September update from UNESCO Associated
Schools in the UK.
This update is part of a bi-monthly series which aims to highlight events and available
resources to support activities in member schools.
Unless specified, the activities listed are not
organised or sponsored by UNESCO Associated Schools in the UK.

New Members
|
|
UNESCO Associated Schools in the UK now has 43
members. We would like to welcome the following schools that joined the network
over the summer:

Reminder - Annual Reports
|
We are keen to hear what
activities your school carried out in the academic year 2007/08, so please
complete your annual report form by 30
September 2008. We are particularly interested in pictures and
quotes that can be used for case studies and examples of best practice.
Please note that all members of UNESCO Associated
Schools are requested to submit an annual report. A summary of the annual
reports, including examples of good practice, will be sent to the International
Coordinator for UNESCO Associated Schools at UNESCO HQ in Paris.

Date for Your Diary - Annual Conference on 12 December
|
We hope you are able to join us for the 2008 Annual
Conference for UNESCO Associated Schools, taking place in Liverpool
on 12 December. The theme of
this year's conference is 'Teaching Human Rights?' The aim of the conference is
to share experiences and perspectives on human right education and will include
a combination of presentations, participatory workshops and plenary sessions. The
conference is free and travel expenses will be covered for a limited number of
participants. You will receive further information, including a programme and
registration form shortly.

Spanish UNESCO Associated School Seeking British Links
|
Castroverde´s School, a UNESCO Associated
School in Santander, Spain
is looking to establish links with a British secondary school to enable
students to practise English and learn about British culture. Please

New Assembly Resources available in October |
|
2008 sees the 60th
anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and we hope you will
mark this event in your school. To help you we have teamed up with United
Nations Association UK to develop a set of assembly resources on human rights
issues for use in key stages 3 and 4. These resources will be available free of
charge in October.

We are in the process
of updating our web pages and will
be collecting case studies from schools in the UK network. If you have
a story you want to share about your school, please contact

Special Edition Newsletter on Slavery in September
|
To mark the inclusion of the
slave trade as a statutory part of the key stage 3 History curriculum in
England, we have put together a special edition newsletter highlighting some
excellent teaching resources addressing historical
slavery. We have also included a list of key UK museums with
exhibitions and workshops on the slave trade. The newsletter will be available
mid-September.

Free INSET Training from Anti Slavery International
|
 As part of the Recovered
Histories project and addressing the
legacies of the transatlantic slave trade, Anti Slavery International is offering
four free INSET days to help empower teachers who lack the confidence and
resources to teach about the transatlantic slave trade under the new History key stage 3 curriculum. The training will be held at the Museum in Docklands,
West India Quay, London, E14 4AL on 22 September, 25
September, 2 October, and 6 October. Please contact Michaela

Free INSET Training from the British Institute of Human Rights
|
Amnesty International UK, the
British Institute of Human Rights and the National Union of Teachers are
holding a free teacher training event for those involved in delivering
Citizenship education at key stage 3. All participants will receive a copy of
new teaching pack Right Here, Right Now - Teaching Citizenship Through
Human Rights, a set of 12 lesson plans and background information for KS3
Citizenship. The training will be held on 15 October and will take place at the
NUT Head Office in London, WC1H 9BD.
