Book Sold for $13.95(Search in PRODUCTS tab, then on left, click Categories: Books)A Symphony in the Brain: The Evolution of the New Brain Wave Biofeedback (2008)
by Jim Robbins (New York Times Science Writer)
(paperback)
Imagine
a procedure versatile enough to treat epilepsy, autism, attention
deficit disorder, addictions, and depression with no drugs or side
effects; to bring patients out of vegetative states; and to improve
everything from golf scores to opera singers' voices. These are only
some of the claims made for Neurofeedback, a controversial but
effective treatment that is revolutionizing the way an incredibly
diverse range of medical and psychological conditions are treated.
In A Symphony in the Brain,
Jim Robbins traces the fascinating, untold story of the development of
Neurofeedback, from its discovery by a small corps of research
psychologists, to its growing application across the country and around
the world, to present battles for acceptance in the conservative
medical world. Offering a wealth of powerful case studies, accessible
scientific explanations, and dramatic personal accounts, Robbins
journeys through a remarkable field, which he brings to the public eye
for the first time. ********************

Quotations "No kind action ever stops with itself. One kind action leads to
another. Good example is followed. A single act of kindness throws out
roots in all directions, and the roots spring up and make new trees.
The greatest work that kindness does to others is that it makes them
kind themselves."

NEW Services Offered at Our Office:
We are now proud
to offer state of the art QEEG testing. This is a form of brain mapping
that helps us to scientifically guide your Neurofeedback protocols.
This is a relatively short, non-invasive test that compares your brain
to a normative data base for your age. A 24-page report is generated
that is then evaluated by our professional staff resulting in a site
specific training program custom-designed for you. Re-mapping is done
periodically and as needed to affirm the program. We can also offer a
quick test for ADHD that is also computer analyzed against normative
data for children and adults. Please call our office for details or to
arrange an appointment.

Another Excerpt from Susan Antelis' Upcoming Book,
Like an Orchid in the Desert

PART 2: STRESS MANAGEMENT
Breathing, particularly, the diaphragmatic type can be considered the "secret weapon" of stress management tools and techniques. It is relatively easy to learn, can be used anywhere at any time in any situation and can be done fairly inconspicuously. Whatever messages your mind or senses are sending to your brain, breathing low, deep and slow can mediate them and keep you at a good equilibrium. According to the AAPB, the Association for Applied Psychophysiology and Biofeedback,
Breathing problems which cause anxiety: Half or more of people who habitually breathe too rapidly with shallow breaths are anxious because of the effects of their breathing on their brains' chemistry. Most of these people are not aware they have incorrect breathing patterns. These incorrect patterns are easily detected using psychophysiological assessments and are corrected using several types of biofeedback related to helping people normalize their breathing patterns. When the breathing is normalized, the anxiety goes away.
Balance is the key here. Your mind is not your brain; it is an entity that interprets perceptions and not always in friendly ways. Sometimes, the mind can feel like a dangerous neighborhood where you should not be alone. Another little known secret weapon, is our ability to shift out of these bad neighborhoods of the mind by passively observing the thoughts without engaging in their seductive dance. We are not actually what we think, but how long we think it. How we engage in the thoughts will affect the body. Thus, the mind-body connection is forged. Thought perceptions can be measured through biofeedback devices called GSR or Galvanic Skin Response sensors which measure levels of psychophysiology arousal or anxiety. From AAPB,
When a person experiences greater levels of anxiety or the anxiety lingers far longer than it should, the body's normal responses to an emergency situation don't shut down. This can cause the body to wear out while thinking and memory patterns change. The physiological reactions to anxiety are accurately assessed using psychophysiological recording techniques so both the patient and therapist always know when any therapy is helping and how much. Biofeedback treatments show the patient the abnormal physiological response levels. Patients use this knowledge to recognize when they are becoming abnormally anxious (so they learn to identify when is actually causing the anxiety) and to control their anxiety.
Sleep is another key element in keeping balance in the nervous system. (I am writing this at 5 am). Also, from AAPB,
Sleep disturbances including abnormally long time to fall asleep, frequent awakenings at night long enough to be remembered, and early awakening without being able to fall back to sleep are frequently related to stress, anxiety, and depression. These problems and the extra worried thinking associated with them cause the body's normal "fight or flight" physical responses to interfere with sleep. Biofeedback used in conjunction with relaxation training and other behavioral approaches to controlling anxiety such as cognitive restructuring (which helps people rethink just how threatening the very real stresses they need to deal with really are) helps people recognize when they are having exaggerated physical stress responses and what they are responding to. The techniques help people learn to control the responses so they are not larger than they need to either be nor last longer than they have to.

FEATURED RELAXATION TECHNIQUE:
Progressive Muscle Relaxation
Q: What is Progressive Muscle Relaxation?
A: Progressive Muscle Relaxation (PMR) teaches you to relax your muscles
through a two-step process. In the first step, you isolate certain muscle
groups and create tension for about 10 seconds. You then let the muscle
relax and let go of the tension. PMR is based on a principle of muscle physiology.
Whenever you create tension in a muscle and then release the tension the
muscle has to relax. The muscle does not have a choice. Not only will your
muscle quickly relax back to its previous state, but it often becomes even
more relaxed than when you started the technique. As you repeat this process
throughout your body, your entire body becomes more relaxed as it releases
tension.
Q: How Do I Do It?
A: Progressive muscle relaxation is easy to do. If you find you have trouble
focusing in the middle of the day or have troubles falling asleep at night,
try following these simple steps. You can enhance your relaxation experience
by rubbing some aromatherapy lotions or oils on your temples and playing
soft, relaxing music.
- Find a quiet space.
- Find a comfortable position in a chair that supports your head and
neck or lying on your back (lie on your side with a pillow between
your legs if you're pregnant or if lying on your back causes
discomfort).
- Close your eyes and take several deep breaths.
- Tighten the muscles in your hands by clenching a tight fist; hold
for 4 counts and then release. Feel the difference between tight
and relaxed muscles.
- Repeat this process with other muscles and even tightening multiple
areas (i.e. clench your jaw, squeeze your eyes close tight, tense
your neck muscles, shrug your shoulders, tighten your arms and legs, curl
your toes under tightly).
- Each time you tighten an area, focus on letting go of the tension
in that area and notice how relaxed your muscles feel as they
relax.
- Finish with a few more slow, deep breaths and enjoy the relaxed feeling
you should now have!
