Greetings!
As some of our program youth are off to summer camp, we wish them happy days! Even though it seems too early to think about fall during these long days of summer, NOW is the time to think about being a school-based mentor for 2010-2011. If you or someone you know can spend one hour a week with a child during lunch, please call today! |

| Outstanding Orange County Speedway Night
We want to give a BIG THANK YOU to the Orange County Fair Speedway, who hosted a Big Brothers Big Sisters night for our kids last month. They recently invited all of the matches in our programs, and their families, to come out for a FREE night at the races. About 35 kids were able to make it, and they had a great time! They LOVED the cars, the dirt and the noise!
Also, the kids got to meet the drivers and take turns with flags, pretending they were controlling the races. There was a coloring contest, prizes, a lap around the track in the "kidz" bus, and other race-inspired giveaway items. All the kids' faces lit up with excitement and wide smiles as they experienced something totally unique.

Bigs & Littles Digest
Volunteering to be a Big Brother or a Big Sister is fun, and the little moments that we share together are the beginning of something big. This digest is a collection of a few of the things our Bigs and Littles did together this month. If you'd like to share your story to inspire others, please let your mentor manager know, or drop us a line on the Facebook Page. Mentoring Means Simple Fun
~ Big Brother Joe said Little Brother Rylen often surprises him . Joe will offer an outing to Chuck E. Cheese, the movies or even Cone Heads and of course Rylen enjoys all those things, but often Rylen enjoys just heading over to Joe's house where they'll pop some popcorn and watch a movie together or play a board game.
Mentoring Means Teaching New Skills ~ Little Sister Monica and Big Sister Nichole got a sandwich from Quik Check and used the touch screen computer ordering system which they decided is so technologically awesome. Then they went swimming and cooled off in a pool since it was a heat wave that day. They took some fun underwater cannon ball pictures (see above header pic!), dove into the pool with running starts to see how far they could glide on the floating tube and shot some hoops in the pool basketball hoop. They had such a blast that Monica took a little nap on the way home.
Mentoring Builds Courage
~ Little Brother J. told Big Brother B. that he was scared to talk to other boys his age, so B. gave him some pointers, and J. walked right up to one of the other boys on the playground and introduced himself! B. had to remind him to look at the other boy's face, but other than that, it went really well.
Mentoring is Great Conversation
~ Big Sister Brenda and Little Sister Ky'ani enjoy heading to Friendly's on a hot summer day where they always get an ice cream and share how their weeks went. This has become "their spot" and something Ky'ani really looks forward to! Mentoring Means Positive Reinforcement ~ Big Brother Bob and Little Brother Naz's latest adventure was seeing Toy Story 3 at the IMAX Theatre at the Palisades Mall in West Nyack. After the movie it was shopping, and then lunch. Naz was happy to share that he completed the year with an improved overall average grade and Big Brother Bob couldn't have been prouder of his efforts throughout the year! Mentoring Means Even the Mentor Tries Something New~ Big Brother Kevin experienced something new and exciting... paintball! Little Brother Kyle had played before but Kevin was the "newbie" on this particular day. Kevin said it didn't take long for him to catch on and "give as good as he got!" An awesome afternoon was had by all and it sounded like Kevin slept like a baby when his head finally got to hit his pillow! |
BIG Thanks
Epicor employees presenting the sneakers to Big Brothers Big Sisters staffers|

|
Thank you to the employees of EPICOR, who recently donated shoes to our programs. The employees were given gift cards by business partner Foot Locker, and instead of using the cards for themselves, the employees selflessly used them to buy shoes for kids who needed them. It's businesses and business partners like these who put community first, that make this a great place to live and work. Thank you for your generosity, Epicor! |
