Greetings!
There are two things that make our agency run, and that's mentors and money. Without these two things, we can't do all the work that we need to do to help make a difference in the lives of children in Orange County. As we kick off the new year, we celebrate National Mentoring Month by letting everyone know how important mentoring can be in the life of a child, and why we appreciate you. This month, we are encouraging our volunteers to take time to tell their friends & family why mentoring means so much to them. You can do so simply by forwarding this email to a friend!
President Obama Proclaims the Value of Mentors
In a recent proclamation, The President said:
We know the difference a responsible, caring adult can make in a child's life: buck them up when they're discouraged; provide tough love when they veer off track; being that person in their lives who doesn't want to let them down, and that they don't want to let down; and refusing to give up on them -- even when they want to give up on themselves. - President Barack Obama
The full transcript of the Presiden'ts speech can be found here, and more information on mentoring can be found at mentoring.org.

Bowl For Kids' Sake 2010
We are getting ready to roll out Bowl For Kids' Sake 2010! Coming Sunday, March 28th, "spare" some time to get a team together to help us raise money for our programs and come have fun for our kids!
Get your team and fundraising started today by going to www.mentorachild.org/bfks. Once you've done that, spread the word! This is our BIGGEST fundraiser of the year, as well as a fun day of food, folks and family that directly supports the work we do mentoring children in Orange County.

A Big Shares What Mentoring Means to Him
by Anthony Breit, Orange County, NY Big Brother
I made the decision to become a big brother and was first matched in 2005. It has proven to be the most gratifying decision in my life. Jaddon and I were matched in August and have done so much in such a short time. We hiked to the peaks of both Schunemunk Mountain (1,664 feet) and Balsam Lake Mountain (3,730 feet), among other hikes. During our hikes we really learn a lot about each other. We hope to take on all of the 35 Catskill peaks above 3,500 feet in the years to come. Thanks to donations from Big Brothers Big Sisters supporters Jaddon went to his first football game at West Point in October and two others since. He attended his first Yankee game in September. We even went to see The Nutcracker Ballet, which was a first for me as well. Jaddon got his first baseball mitt a few months ago and will play little league in the spring but before that we hope to do some sleigh riding this winter. I try to keep our time together positive and constructive. Jaddon has a great attitude and wants to try everything. The time I spend with Jaddon is the best time of my week.

Today! |
In order to provide services to the children of Orange County, we count on support from individuals like you. Any amount that you can give will help fill in the gaps, and provide some relief from the financial crunch we are all feeling.

Thank You Oblong
This email is brought to you thanks to the kind support of Oblong Books and Music, one of the premier bookstores in the Hudson Valley. They graciously sponsored our Constant Contact account under the "Cares4Kids" program. This sponsorship frees up much needed funds that we will put directly back into our programs.
