Letter from the President
|
First, apologies for the title of this month's letter. "Joyful Framing" sounds like either an invitation to have a good time while setting your enemies up to go to jail or a "how to" for happy photography. In fact, what I want to do is talk about Mission and Vision Statements.
As your District President/Bishop, I serve on a number of Boards in the wider church. In that capacity, I've had the great fortune to go through multi-year governance re-vamping with several agencies, often with an eye toward establishing "policy-based governance." It's been a salutary and several times incredibly positive experience. However, I am quick to add that none of this was ever taught either in confirmation class or at the seminary. Transforming Churches Network
|
Save the Date
Two important Transforming Churches Network events coming up.
Wouldn't it be fantastic if all our churches were enthusiastically and effectively reaching unchurched and unbelieving people with the Gospel? The hinge on which the door to effective mission swings is the empowerment of our people of passion to become missional leaders. Since 2005, Transforming Churches Network has consulted with more than 250 LCMS churches, impacting the quality and scope of their outreach. Now, the basic training contained in the consultation weekend is being made available to all the churches of our district as a one-day seminar.
Learn how changes in our culture over the past 50 years require some major missional shifts in how the church must engage society with the Gospel of Hope. See how to turn the church's declining membership and influence in its community into a new revitalized life cycle. Find encouragement to shift the focus of a local church off of its own organization and on to the effective living out of the Great Commission. But wait!--there's more. Pastors, leaders and people of passion can address these issues and find out "what more" is offered at two Hinge Training Events in our district.
Saturday April 21st at Our Savior, Colonie in upstate New York
and
Saturday May 12th at Immanuel, Whitestone in Queens
Plan to bring a group from your church and get excited together. More details to follow.

Junior Youth Experience is Back! | |
JYE 2012
The Junior Youth Experience is coming back to the Atlantic District this May 18th and 19th! What is a Junior Youth Experience you ask? JYE is a smaller scale youth gathering tailored specifically for your confirmation students! Hosted at Concordia College in Bronxville, New York, this event will include over 24 hours of fellowship for your students. Featured at this event will be Jeffrey Meinz, who has spoken at numerous youth gatherings and youth events including the LCMS National Youth Gathering. In addition to Jeffrey, the participants will be lead in multiple worship, service, and fellowship opportunities. There will also be some opportunities for the students and the chaperones to have their own programming, with the students being entertained with Concordia College Event Staff. The cost of the event will be $80 per participant, and we ask that each church group bring adequate adult supervision on a 1-5 ratio. To sign up, please visit the Atlantic District website after March 1st.
For more up to date information regarding the event please visit the Atlantic District website and Facebook pages.

Haiti Meal Packing Event 2012
| |
A message from Erica Spangler, Long Island Lutheran High School Community Coordinator for The Haiti Meal Packing Project: Your hands feeding hungry children, around the world and around the corner:
The Haiti Meal Packing event was undertaken last year by Long Island Lutheran HS and had much success. The school partnered with Kids Against Hunger, an organization based out of Minnesota , to work to feed both local families and the children of Haiti . Last year we raised money and were able to pack over 300,000 meals which fed 800 children a meal a day for an entire year. We did not do this alone, but had the help of several local congregations and other organizations who also raised money and served in the meal packing event. We are seeking any involvement we can inspire from the community for this year's event that will take place from April 26 through April 28, 2012, at Long Island Lutheran High School .
To learn more about the 2012 Haiti Meal Packing Project and to register to participate, please Click here for full informational flier or click here for registration form or contact Erica Spangler at ericacspangler@hotmail.com or 516-626-1197.

Lutheran Malaria Initiative
| |
Lutheran Malaria Initiative program staff, Hilaire Zon from West Africa shared that the most recent LMI program in Mali had some surprising results. Since 2006 the percentage of children under 5 years old sleeping under a bed net has increased from 27% to 99%. Households owning at least one bed net jumped from 66% to 99% and pregnant women sleeping under a bed net the previous night went from 31% to 86%. All of these changes are directly related to the programming of LMI and its partners.
Please consider Holiday gifts to the LMI campaign through your church, through LIMM, or directly to www.lutheranmalaria.org. All of us together CAN help to change history and eradicate deaths in Africa from malaria by 2015.

Campus Visit Offers Clarity for Prospective Students |
|
|
For Immediate Release
January 31, 2012
FORT WAYNE, IN (CTS)-Men considering the pastoral ministry and contemplating service as a deaconess have many questions. In order to provide clarity, Concordia Theological Seminary, Fort Wayne, offers the Prayerfully Consider Campus Visit, March 22-24. There is no charge for this event which allows participants the opportunity to immerse themselves in the seminary community. There will be time to sit in on classes, meet with faculty and students, learn about financial aid options and just get to know the Fort Wayne area. To learn more, go to www.ctsfw.edu/PCV or phone 800-481-2155 to talk with a member of the Admission staff.
"We encourage anyone considering the vocation of pastor or deaconess to take full advantage of the campus visit," offered Rev. Thomas Zimmerman, CTS Dean of Students. "During their time on campus participants become a part of the seminary community. They have the opportunity to worship with us, learn from our faculty and ask questions of students who have already begun their journey at CTS."
Prayerfully consider this opportunity and make plans to visit Concordia Theological Seminary, Fort Wayne, in March.
Concordia Theological Seminary exists to form servants in Jesus Christ who teach the faithful, reach the lost, and care for all.
