Letter from the President
Dr. David BenkeArise, Shine

About two billion of the world's Christians, including Lutherans, follow the cycle of the church year.  Our seasons, our colors, our lessons, our themes, the sweep of the Christian story of salvation, all of that and forms the rhythmical roll through our spiritual lives.  Across the divides of doctrinal disputes large and small, Lutherans and Roman Catholics and the Orthodox traditions and the Anglicans along with some other Protestants value this rhythm with what to the rest of the world appears to be some kind of unity, even though we often tend to emphasize internally what keeps us apart rather than what binds us together.

What if those themes were living emphases that sent the faithful forth having been blessed through Word and Meal to bless the world?  To start at the church's beginning we would have to revert to Advent - how have we helped the world, and our specific worlds of influence block by block and house by house, to know that there is a way to live expectantly, joyously, hopefully?  If two billion people spent Advent living that way because of the message that a promised Savior becomes One of us, would not power be released from on high?

Haiti Meal Packing Event 2012

A message from Erica Spangler, Long Island Lutheran High School Community Coordinator for The Haiti Meal Packing Project: Your hands feeding hungry children, around the world and around the corner:

The Haiti Meal Packing event was undertaken last year by Long Island Lutheran HS and had much success. The school partnered with Kids Against Hunger, an organization based out of Minnesota , to work to feed both local families and the children of Haiti . Last year we raised money and were able to pack over 300,000 meals which fed 800 children a meal a day for an entire year. We did not do this alone, but had the help of several local congregations and other organizations who also raised money and served in the meal packing event. We are seeking any involvement we can inspire from the community for this year's event that will take place from April 26 through April 28, 2012, at Long Island Lutheran High School .

To learn more about the 2012 Haiti Meal Packing Project and to register to participate, please Click here for full informational flier or click here for registration form or contact Erica Spangler at ericacspangler@hotmail.com or 516-626-1197.

Lutheran Malaria Initiative

Lutheran Malaria Initiative program staff, Hilaire Zon from West Africa shared that the most recent LMI program in Mali had some surprising results.  Since 2006 the percentage of children under 5 years old sleeping under a bed net has increased from 27% to 99%.  Households owning at least one bed net jumped from 66% to 99% and pregnant women sleeping under a bed net the previous night went from 31% to 86%.  All of these changes are directly related to the programming of LMI and its partners.

Please consider Holiday gifts to the LMI campaign through your church, through LIMM, or directly to www.lutheranmalaria.org.  All of us together CAN help to change history and eradicate deaths in Africa from malaria by 2015.
