Letter from the President
Dr. David BenkeDecember Madness

But for those of us who work in churches, it's December Madness, as the Advent/Christmas cycle brings two or three solid weeks of hustle and bustle right through to Christmas Eve and Christmas Day.  And for those of us in Latino cultural zones, there's an extension until January 6 - Los Tres Reyes - Three Kings.

While we rail against the cultural spending craziness, we in "church world" have been for at least a couple of centuries caught up in extremely busy sets of activities including caroling, Christmas programs, and extra holiday services.  All of it CAN be wonderful, and yet....

Fall 2011 Engage

Whether it's building homes in Haiti, or providing hurricane relief, what is granted to us is the opportunity to speak of God's love arriving in the Word made flesh.  As you read the stories in the Fall 2011 issue of Engage, please consider a generous Advent gift to the Mission Society to help support acts of love and service throughout the District and the world.

Haiti Meal Packing Event 2012

A message from Erica Spangler, Long Island Lutheran High School Community Coordinator for The Haiti Meal Packing Project: Your hands feeding hungry children, around the world and around the corner:

The Haiti Meal Packing event was undertaken last year by Long Island Lutheran HS and had much success. The school partnered with Kids Against Hunger, an organization based out of Minnesota , to work to feed both local families and the children of Haiti . Last year we raised money and were able to pack over 300,000 meals which fed 800 children a meal a day for an entire year. We did not do this alone, but had the help of several local congregations and other organizations who also raised money and served in the meal packing event. We are seeking any involvement we can inspire from the community for this year's event that will take place from April 26 through April 28, 2012, at Long Island Lutheran High School .

To learn more about the 2012 Haiti Meal Packing Project and to register to participate, please Click here for full informational flier or click here for registration form or contact Erica Spangler at ericacspangler@hotmail.com or 516-626-1197.

Tools for Publishing Websites from Task Force 6

Instead of looking through phone books, these days many people turn to the Internet for information about organizations in their area. So hasn't the time come for each Atlantic District congregation to be represented with a website? Even a simple, attractive web page, with contact information and the types and times of services you provide, can help raise your visibility on the Net and in your community. Communications and Technology Task Force members would like to make sure that each congregation has the tools and information it needs to maximize communication to its own members and outreach to the community.

1)       You don't have to wait for a financial windfall to get started developing or improving your website. Apply today for a TF6 mini-grant (see announcement below).

2)       Explore one of the following useful tools for publishing websites that our task force members have shared. We hope you'll find them helpful!

"Here is a great website, Wordpress Driven Church, http://wordpresschurch.org/, with a tutorial for how to get started with creating and maintaining, for FREE, a Wordpress website. They also have a gallery of church websites and design ideas," says Amie Hollmann, Christ Woodside.  Click here for tutorial.

Naresh Seoprasad, Redeemer, Bronx, offers the following sites: Google Sites; The CoffeeCup Free HTML Editor ; Weebly.

From Task Force 6- Communications Continues Mini-Grants

The Communications Task Force (TF #6) would like to help congregations and ministries communicate better with mini-grants of $500 to $1,000. We have money allotted for several grants in the upcoming year.

Are there ways in which your congregation or ministry would like to better communicate within your community or with your neighborhood and the world? Would a small grant help get things started?  Send your communications or technology-related inquiry by March 31, 2012 to Kristen.Schulz@ad-lcms.org.

Our hope is that congregations and ministries will apply for these small funding or pro bono assistance opportunities to better communicate the Gospel of Hope. Please let us know what you need!

Lutheran Malaria Initiative

Lutheran Malaria Initiative program staff, Hilaire Zon from West Africa shared that the most recent LMI program in Mali had some surprising results.  Since 2006 the percentage of children under 5 years old sleeping under a bed net has increased from 27% to 99%.  Households owning at least one bed net jumped from 66% to 99% and pregnant women sleeping under a bed net the previous night went from 31% to 86%.  All of these changes are directly related to the programming of LMI and its partners.

Please consider Holiday gifts to the LMI campaign through your church, through LIMM, or directly to www.lutheranmalaria.org.  All of us together CAN help to change history and eradicate deaths in Africa from malaria by 2015.

Small Business Health Care Tax Credit

Please find the following two documents designed to help employers understand and get a feel for the Small Business Health Care Tax Credit made available under the Affordable Care Act. Employers whose year-end was June 30 have until November 15 to file for the credit or request an automatic 3 month extension, plus the credit is for tax years 2010 - 2013, so even December 31 year-end employers need to be made aware of the credit for next year's tax filing (due May 15 for December 31 employers).
