Letter from the President
Dr. David BenkeTrue Unity

Here at the intersection of All Saints Day and Thanksgiving, our normal November bookends, how about three cheers for True Unity?  Amidst the national polarities as we ramp down toward a major election year, and in the din of competing religious honks on the horn from outside and from within, we are remanded to the custody of the heavenly chorus.

There the saints and angels around God's eternal throne sing as one.
There the prayers and petitions rise as one to the Father.
There we are told that God Himself will wipe away every tear from every eye, treating each saint as uniquely and totally valuable.
There praise is what's going on.
There adoration is ever-present.
There neither night nor day interrupt the united chorus.

2011 Witness in the Public Square Luncheon:

10 Year Anniversary of 9/11... We Remember

On Tuesday, October 18th, over 230 guests attended the Atlantic District's annual Witness in The Public Square benefit luncheon at the New York Athletic Club in New York City. Proceeds from the luncheon help support the work of the missionaries through the Mission Society.

The theme for this year's event, We Remember, focused on the 10 year Anniversary of the 9/11 terror attacks. Those attending the luncheon were moved by the first-hand accounts and personal reflections of Dr. David Benke and the four honorees of the events of 9/11 and its terrible aftermath.

Following are photographs of the honorees, guests at the luncheon and a post-luncheon visit to the Tribute WTC Visitor's Center and Battery Park Gardens in lower Manhattan.

As President Benke stated last month:
"We are sent forth with God's blessing restored and forgiven, fortified with the Body and Blood of Christ every Sunday from our altars into the world to be a blessing. We desire nothing more than to be a shining witness, provide mercy, and demonstrate to a world in need, especially those afflicted by hurricane and storm, that we will engage the world with the Gospel of hope!"

Haiti Meal Packing Event 2012

A message from Erica Spangler, Long Island Lutheran High School Community Coordinator for The Haiti Meal Packing Project: Your hands feeding hungry children, around the world and around the corner:

The Haiti Meal Packing event was undertaken last year by Long Island Lutheran HS and had much success. The school partnered with Kids Against Hunger, an organization based out of Minnesota , to work to feed both local families and the children of Haiti . Last year we raised money and were able to pack over 300,000 meals which fed 800 children a meal a day for an entire year. We did not do this alone, but had the help of several local congregations and other organizations who also raised money and served in the meal packing event. We are seeking any involvement we can inspire from the community for this year's event that will take place from April 26 through April 28, 2012, at Long Island Lutheran High School .

To learn more about the 2012 Haiti Meal Packing Project and to register to participate, please Click here for full informational flier or click here for registration form or contact Erica Spangler at ericacspangler@hotmail.com or 516-626-1197.

From Task Force 6- Communications:  Announces Mini-Grants

The Communications Task Force (TF #6) would like to help congregations and ministries communicate better with mini-grants of $500 to $1,000. We have money allotted for several grants in the 2011 Budget Year.

Are there ways in which your congregation or ministry would like to better communicate within your community or with your neighborhood and the world? Would a small grant help get things started?  Send your communications or technology-related inquiry by November 30th to Kristen.Schulz@ad-lcms.org.

Our hope is that congregations and ministries will apply for these small funding or pro bono assistance opportunities to better communicate the Gospel of Hope. Please let us know what you need!

Chair, TF 6-Communications

Small Business Health Care Tax Credit

Please find the following two documents designed to help employers understand and get a feel for the Small Business Health Care Tax Credit made available under the Affordable Care Act. Employers whose year-end was June 30 have until November 15 to file for the credit or request an automatic 3 month extension, plus the credit is for tax years 2010 - 2013, so even December 31 year-end employers need to be made aware of the credit for next year's tax filing (due May 15 for December 31 employers).
