Engagement Party
Allow me to encourage you to a summer of engagement parties. As a pastor who does his share of weddings, I go to engagement parties all the time. They're full of hope and expectation, of joy that's just beginning but definitely unfolding, and unless there's a former boyfriend or girlfriend on site, the house is filled with folks having a great time even as they celebrate the importance of matters of the heart.
The engagement on my mind is a bit different, however. I'm thinking of Vacation Bible Schools. Of servant events in the neighborhood. Of parish picnics. Of retreats and relaxed format worship. Of clean-up, paint-up, fix-up events while the building is less frenetically occupied. Of youth group beach trips. All of these to me are engagement party opportunities. Because you and yours can utilize them and many more like them as your way to thoroughly enjoy Engaging the World with the Gospel of Hope.

| 2011 Witness in the Public Square | |
This year at the annual Witness in the Public Square Luncheon we will be having a special focus - the 10 year anniversary of the September 11 attack
on the World Trade Center.
As we remember those terrible events we seek to see God's grace and healing at work. To that end, we have chosen honorees whose presence that day enabled them
to be used by God in unique ways.
Chaplain Stephen Unger of the FBI will be honored as a first responder.
Mr. Harrison Oellrich who escaped the towers will represent the survivors.
Mr. Lee Ielpi of the Tribute Center, whose son gave his life in the attack, and
Miss Jennifer Adams also of the Tribute Center, will represent the victim's families.
Please mark your calendars for Tuesday October 18th and join us for what we know will be a moving and memorable event. To receive your invitation, please contact Carol Mittelstaedt at:

School Leadership and Development
| After a year-long SLED training event, two of our own commissioned teachers received their certificates of completion. Congratulations to Matthew Dummann from Our Saviour in the Bronx and Chris Reno from Long Island Lutheran Middle and High School in Brookville!
School Leadership and Development The School Leadership Development Project (SLED) seeks to identify and equip potential Lutheran elementary school leaders. This is done through a process of nomination, selection and intense training over the course of an academic year. Those selected for the program are required to attend and participate at three specially designed training events and are mentored over the course of the project by well respected, experienced Lutheran school administrators. Since 1989, the SLED Project has trained over 200 elementary school administrators now serving in Lutheran schools. |

| From Task Force 6- Communications: Announces Mini-Grants | |
The Communications Task Force (TF #6) would like to help congregations and ministries communicate better with mini-grants of $500 to $1,000. We have money allotted for several grants in the 2011 Budget Year.
Are there ways in which your congregation or ministry would like to better communicate within your community or with your neighborhood and the world? Would a small grant help get things started? Send your communications or technology-related inquiry by November 30th to Kristen.Schulz@ad-lcms.org.
Our hope is that congregations and ministries will apply for these small funding or pro bono assistance opportunities to better communicate the Gospel of Hope. Please let us know what you need!
