Letter from the President
Dr. David Benke
The Walk

Graduates at all levels are "Taking the Walk" during May and June, with the first level hikers emphasized in June.  It's the walk across the stage toward that authority figure holding out his or her right hand for a shake while the left hand, the money hand, dispenses the diploma.  Then it's a "hip-hip, hooray" as spinning mortarboards wheel in the air and on to the next level or out into the world.

We human beings need a certified sense of accomplishment.  Diplomas hang on walls so people can see for themselves how far we've come, how degreed is our resume.  Parents and family members record all of it not only on video and phone-cams, but deep within their hearts - at certain levels of graduation from certain schools it's because their wallets have been emptied in the process of their children gaining that diploma.

St. Paul sets us on a different, more elevated path in his letter to the Philippians.  "You want credentials?'  he begins.  "I'll show you credentials.
Circumcised Jew?  That's me.  Hebrew of the Hebrews?  I am that man.  Walk the walk as a follower of the law all the way to the Pharisee level, all the way to legalistic righteousness heights?  Been there, done that, have the certificates and persecutional photos on the wall to prove it."

From Task Force 6- Communications:  Announces Mini-Grants

The Communications Task Force (TF #6) would like to help congregations and ministries communicate better with mini-grants of $500 to $1,000. We have money allotted for several grants in the 2011 Budget Year.

Are there areas your congregation or ministry that may need help to better communicate within your community or with your neighborhood and the world? Would a small grant help get things started? Send your communications requests by June 30th to Kristen.Schulz@ad-lcms.org . We will use the list of requests to create a funding application for TF#6 Ablaze mini-grants.

Our hope is that congregations and ministries will apply for these small funding or pro bono assistance opportunities to better communicate the Gospel of Hope. But before we know what to offer, we need to know what you need!

Rev. Dr. Robert Hartwell
Chair, TF 6-Communications
Pastor Village Lutheran Church

From Task Force 7- Church Worker Wellness
We are continuing with the series of articles written by John Eckrich, MD who is the Executive Director of Grace Place Retreats.  Click here to read the article on "Social Well Being".   Dr. Eckrich is not only knowledgeable in the medical field, but a deeply spiritual man concerned with the well being of our LCMS church workers (and spouses!)    The title of this on-going series of articles is "Living and Serving Gracefully".    Please take a few minutes out of your busy day to refresh yourself with Dr. Eckrich's insights.

Again, I would also like to encourage pastors to subscribe to an on-line newsletter from the LCMS.  With the new LCMS web page, it is necessary to "re-subscribe" to any of the newsletters previously requested.  The one for pastors is called A Pastoral Touch and is written by Rev. John Fale, Interim Executive Director of World Relief and Human Care Ministries.  To subscribe to A Pastoral Touch,  go to www.lcms.org by June 10 and create a myLCMS account by clicking "Register" in the top right corner of the homepage.  Select A Pastoral Touch from among the "LCMS World Relief and Human Care" newsletters.
Disaster Relief Updates -- Joplin, MO and Haiti

Disaster in Joplin, MO

Missouri District President, Rev. Ray Mirly sent out a press release regarding the disaster relief efforts in Joplin.  At the end of his article, he notes that if individuals wish to make contributions to assist with the recovery efforts, donations should be made to one these of five organizations:

District Fund for Haiti

Donations to the District Fund for Haiti relief totaled $39, 979.90.  As with the funds raised after the tsunami in South Asia, we wanted to make a long-term difference in Haiti.  One of the projects given $5,000 in funds from this disaster response fund was to Christ Lutheran Church in Woodside.  The members and Pastor Joshua Hollmann are building an orphanage on the border with the Dominican Republic.

The second project scheduled to be funded is four homes to be built by the organization Food for the Poor.   Research was done through our District Task Force and by Dick Lomnitzer to determine the best option for building permanent shelter for the many that are without safe living quarters.  Food for the Poor has built over 7,000 homes in the Caribbean and Central America.  Of the homes built by FFP in Haiti prior to the earthquake, only one was damaged in the quake.  The District will donate $20,800.00 to this effort.

If congregations would like to participate in the Haiti rebuilding efforts, speakers are available from the District and Food for the Poor to address congregations.

Lutherans for Life 2011 Conference

Lutherans For Life is hosting their 2011 National Conference in Irving, Texas, August 5-6, 2011 at the Sheraton Grand Hotel DFW. The conference theme is Adopted in Christ.

The conference will focus on helping participants grow in their understanding of what it means to be Adopted in Christ and how this action of our heavenly Father affects our relationships with one another and the manner in which we deal with life issues in our congregations. We pray the conference will also equip attendees with knowledge on the positive aspects of earthly adoption and with skills to raise awareness of this in their congregations. The conference will be God's children learning and growing together so they can help others better understand what it means to be a child of God!
