Letter from the President
Dr. David Benke
Lifelong Lent and the Gospel Surprise

For many of our parishes, this is the time of the year when all eight cylinders are pumping.  The baptismal, first communion and confirmation classes are rounding the turn toward Holy Week, church attendance is up, folks are motivated to take that walk with Jesus all the way to the cross and beyond, Gospel proclamation seems not to go in one ear and out the other but to hit that spot between the eyes, and as spring arrives there's not only more green on the trees but in the offering plate.  It's great to be a Lutheran in Lent - if only it lasted all year long!

Whoops - 52 weeks of violet on the altar?  52 weeks of Lenten coin folders? That's a lot of quarters (or in the "modern" era dollar bills).  52 weeks of giving up something or at least pretending to give up something?

I would contend, though, that there is a case to be made for Perpetual Lent, Lifelong Lent, as the way of the Christian in the world.  It's all about following Jesus. It's all about life IN Christ.  And it's all about daily baptismal repentance and renewal.

Atlantic District Receives Lutheran Crusader Fund Grant
The District gratefully acknowledges a grant in the amount of $1,500 from Lutheran Crusader Fund to support free clinics to assist people in immigrant neighborhoods in New York City as they become acclimatized to their new home.  Clinics will be hosted in the non-threatening, faith-based environments of Metro NY LCMS churches. The project is an
extension of the District's Task Force on Health and Human Care Ministries.
From Task Force 6- Communications:  Announces Mini-Grants

The Communications Task Force (TF #6) would like to help congregations and ministries communicate better with mini-grants of $500 to $1,000. We have money allotted for several grants in the 2011 Budget Year.

Are there areas your congregation or ministry that may need help to better communicate within your community or with your neighborhood and the world? Would a small grant help get things started? Send your communications requests by June 30th to Kristen.Schulz@ad-lcms.org . We will use the list of requests to create a funding application for TF#6 Ablaze mini-grants.

Our hope is that congregations and ministries will apply for these small funding or pro bono assistance opportunities to better communicate the Gospel of Hope. But before we know what to offer, we need to know what you need!

Rev. Dr. Robert Hartwell
Chair, TF 6-Communications
Pastor Village Lutheran Church

From Task Force 7 - Church Worker Wellness

Beginning with this issue of the E-Communiqué, we will provide a link to articles written by John Eckrich, MD who is the Executive Director of Grace Place Retreats.  The title of this on-going series of articles is "Living and Serving Gracefully". We are sort of playing "catch-up", so with this E-Communiqué will be links to two articles in the series: the first "Well-Being"; the second "Physical Well Being". Please take a few minutes out of your busy day to refresh yourself with Dr. Eckrich's insights.

Oh, and by the way, here's a "teaser" for next month - "Fiscal Well Being" (Now that we've done our taxes we should have a handle on that :-)

 ~Jude Benke, chair

Lutherans for Life 2011 Conference

Lutherans For Life is hosting their 2011 National Conference in Irving, Texas, August 5-6, 2011 at the Sheraton Grand Hotel DFW. The conference theme is Adopted in Christ.

The conference will focus on helping participants grow in their understanding of what it means to be Adopted in Christ and how this action of our heavenly Father affects our relationships with one another and the manner in which we deal with life issues in our congregations. We pray the conference will also equip attendees with knowledge on the positive aspects of earthly adoption and with skills to raise awareness of this in their congregations. The conference will be God's children learning and growing together so they can help others better understand what it means to be a child of God!
