Letter from the President

Witness in the Public Square
The new three-cornered thematic for the Missouri Synod contains three Greek words - koinonia, diakonia, and martyria, which have been translated for easy access to "Life Together," "Mercy", and "Witness." I like it, the more so because the idea was taken from English District President Dave Stechholz, who ascribes his inspiration to our own Atlantic District Bronx Pastor Berthold Von Schenk and his book, "Lively Stone," published by our own American Lutheran Publicity Bureau.
"Witness," from the word that came to signify those who would state their belief in Christ, the Son of the Living God, the Hope Who lived within them publicly, even upon pain of death. They were and are the "Martyrs" who throng around the throne of God in heaven.

Lutheran Social Services Sponsors Christmas Market
|
Mark Your Calendar!November 6, 2010
Lutheran Social Services of New York is pleased to announce that it will sponsor its first special version of the centuries-old tradition "Christmas Market". On November 6, 2010 Trinity Lutheran Church, Hicksville, NY will be the site of Lutheran Social Services' Congregation LIFE Christmas Market. Agency proceeds from this special event will be used to support the newly created Congregation LIFE Fund. Congregations will be able to apply for these grant funds to support their social ministry efforts. Congregations will also have the opportunity to be one of the many anticipated Congregation LIFE Christmas Market vendors. Individual proceeds will be retained by the participating congregations. For more information and how your congregation can become part of this event contact: Bonnie Olesen, Event Coordinator at: ChristmasMarket@LSSNY.org. The History of Christmas Markets Each year Christmas Markets spring up around Germany in the weeks before the Christmas holidays, signaling the beginning of Advent. The centuries-old tradition reaches back to a time when regular seasonal markets took place throughout the year. Usually, the Christmas Markets were held around the city's main church to attract church-goers. Throughout the years, each Christmas Market has stayed true to its own particularities, with each specializing on local delicacies and traditional products. Christmas Markets serve much the same function that they have for centuries - as a festive meeting place for locals and a market for homemade Christmas items, decorations, holiday foods and other traditional Christmas festivities.

SEMINARY VISITATION EVENT FOR
PROSPECTIVE PASTORS AND DEACONESSES | To be held October 7-9, 2010
on the Seminary campus. Designed for those who are college age or older, the
structured visitation event provides an effective means for learning more about
life in the Concordia Seminary community and the preparation that leads to
service as a pastor, missionary, chaplain, or deaconess in The Lutheran
Church-Missouri Synod.
Check-in and campus tours take place on Thursday
afternoon. Those who arrive earlier are invited to observe a class in session or
visit the bookstore. A welcome reception and dinner provide a unique opportunity
to meet Seminary faculty in an informal setting. After dinner, participants will
hear a presentation on the formation for ministry, meet the Student Ambassadors,
and attend an evening chapel service. Paired with a current student, participants will attend
chapel and observe classes on Friday. Sessions will focus on the spiritual and
personal aspects of the decision-making process, as well as provide
opportunities for presentations on the academic program, resident field
education, vicarage and internship years, financial assistance, and housing.
An occasion for further dialogue with current students
occurs during the student panel discussion Friday evening. Married and single
student housing tours and individual appointments with admissions counselors and
the life transitions office are made available to participants on Saturday
morning. The visitation event concludes with a farewell
brunch. The second Contemplate... event of the academic year
will take place on March 10-12, 2011. There is no charge to attend Contemplate..., and all meals and lodging
are provided free of charge. Round-trip transportation to Concordia Seminary
from the airport is provided. For more information, click here, contact the admissions office at
1-800-822-9545 or admissions@csl.edu.
