Letter from the President
| Eye on Ball Some of my enjoyable private moments are
spent on some underused park land in Queens shagging a few nine irons
from baseball diamond to baseball diamond. There I am a legend in my
own mind as the shots soar majestically toward the dirt infield at
second base, and I WIN THE US OPEN!!! These fantasies are stopped cold
whenever I take my eye off the ball, because then the shot weaves off
into the deep grass like a wounded duck.
June is a month of keeping the eye on the
ball for many of us - the overwhelming amount of activities and the
good weather conspire to bring about near-constant motion -
graduations, weddings, ordinations, installations, baptisms, Father's
Day, end-of-school, start of summer school, baccalaureates, Little
League - you name it, we're going to or coming from it.
In the Church's season of
Trinity/Pentecost, we're plunged into the life and ministry of Jesus
and the discerning leading of the Holy Spirit all at once.

APPOINTMENTS
AND RATIFICATIONS:
Recently
the Second Vice-President of the Atlantic District, Rev. Deric A.
Taylor, accepted a Divine Call to serve as Pastor of Our Savior
Lutheran Church, Fair Lawn, New Jersey. Since the congregation
is in the New Jersey District, Pastor Taylor resigned as Atlantic
District Vice-President.
Subsequently,
I have made the following appointments. Most of these have been
ratified by the Praesidium of the Atlantic District and the Board of
Directors of the District.
I. I
have appointed Rev. Paul Sauer, Pastor of Our Savior Lutheran Church
and School, Bronx, NY, to be the Fourth Vice-President of the
Atlantic District, representing District Circuits 5, 6 and 7 and
including most of the five New York City boroughs (with the
exception of far southeastern Queens) as well as Westchester
County.
II. I
have appointed Rev. Derek Lecakes, Pastor of Immanuel Lutheran
Church, Niskayuna, NY, to be the Secretary of the Atlantic District,
replacing Pr. Sauer.
III. I
have appointed Rev. Victor Nelson, Pastor of Resurrection Lutheran
Church, Cairo, NY, to the position of regional (region one)
pastoral representative to the Board of Directors, Atlantic
District.
IV. I
have appointed Rev. James T. Gajadhar, Pastor of the Queens
Tri-Parish, to be Counselor of District Circuit 7 (Queens),
replacing Rev. Arthur Gillespie, who is retiring as Pastor of St.
John's Lutheran Church, College Point.
V. In
consultation with the Praesidium of the Atlantic District, the
Pastor/Teacher/DCE Interview Committee for the Atlantic District
will be convened regionally by the respective vice-president, with
additional committee members selected from the region involved by
the vice-president in consultation with the District President.
May
the Comforter, the Holy Spirit, rest upon those who have accepted
these appointments, and may prayers of thanksgiving rise from our
altars at the ministry of Pastors Taylor and Gillespie among us! Both have served their entire ordained ministry in the Atlantic
District, with combined years of dedication numbering close to 60!

District Holds Spring Pastor's Conference
| On Tuesday, May 4, the Atlantic
District held its daylong Spring Pastor's Conference at Concordia
College, NY. About 80 pastors from throughout the District were in
attendance. A great turnout!
The day began with
the celebration of the Holy Eucharist in the Ralph C. Schultz Chapel
on the campus. At the end of the service, Rev. Charles Froehlich,
1st Vice President, led the assembly in a warm tribute to
Pastor Deric Taylor and his wife Julie for their years of service to
the District. Pastor Taylor is leaving the District to accept a call
as sole pastor of Our Savior Lutheran Church in Fair Lawn, New
Jersey.
Rev. Taylor has
been Vice President for Region 2 since being elected at the District
convention in June 2009-he has served as a District Vice President
before. He has also been serving as Associate Pastor of Village
Lutheran Church in Bronxville.
The District holds
pastoral conferences twice each year, in the spring and fall, in
accordance with Missouri Synod bylaws. The next conference will be in
October, but the exact date has not been decided.
Those in attendance pay tribute
to Rev. Deric Taylor, who has accepted a call outside of the District

MUSLIM OUTREACH LAY BIBLE
INSTITUTE
RESCHEDULED
| Concordia Seminary has rescheduled its Lay
Bible Institute for Saturday, August 7, from 9:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. on
the topic
of Muslim outreach. This workshop will be led by Dr. John Loum, director
of the
Ethnic Immigrant Institute of Theology (EIIT), who has worked among
Muslims in
Europe, Africa, and the United States for more than 20 years.
Participants will be provided with a unique
perspective
on one of the fastest growing religions in America. One year ago, the
Pope
publicly recognized Islam and the Muslims by stating, "There are more
Muslims in
the world than Roman Catholics." This public acknowledgment has
reinvigorated
the Muslim community in its outreach efforts. Consequently, Muslims in
America
have been approaching Christians of all backgrounds with the full intent
of
conversion. Countless Christians are embracing Islam each year in
America. This
has serious implications for the Christian faith and the proclamation of
the
Gospel. The sessions will include various topics on Islam and what you
need to
know about your Muslim neighbors, co-workers, or even the Muslim your
child may
date in the future. All denominations are welcome to this
workshop. The cost for the Lay Bible Institute is $20,
plus $6.50
for an optional lunch ticket in the Seminary's dining hall. The deadline
to
register is July 25. To register or for more information, contact
Continuing
Education and Parish Services at 314-505-7486 or ce@csl.edu.
