Letter from the President
| Transitions "I was strolling through the park one
day/in the merry, merry month of May...." This is the end of what they
call "Mud" in the North Country at Camp SonRise - the transition
between winter and summer that's usually termed "Spring." In my
front yard the azaleas are in bloom, and the garden, Judy's terrain,
is in great shape. The great natural transition - trees blossoming,
flowers blooming, birds chirping - calls us from God's created world
to thoughts of abundant life.
Right smack in the merry middle of May our gaze is elevated
as we celebrate the third transition of our Lord - through death, to
resurrected life, and up to the heavens - on Ascension Day.

DISTRICT LUTHERAN WOMEN'S MISSIONARY LEAGUE

What's New in the LWML?
The women of the Atlantic District LWML
met in convention April 24th-25th. A new
mission goal of $75,000 was adopted for the 2010-2012 biennium.
Janice M. Wendorf, LWML President was our
inspirational speaker. Her message to us is her vision statement. It
is as follows: Lutheran Women in Mission who are...-
In the Word: honoring a daily
appointment with the Father and His Word
-
Of the Word: made over by the Holy
Spirit, forgiven and restored
-
Walking with the Lord: totally confident
of Christ's presence in serving and living.
We also heard "Mission Moments";
these were messages from some previous grant recipients. It gave us
all an opportunity to see how our mite donations are put to use.
We had elections for officers and results are
as follows:
President: Deborah Graybosch (Suffolk
Zone) Vice President for Spiritual Life:Lynette
Taylor (Queens Zone)
Vice President for Leader Development: Eunice
Bailey (Queens Zone) Correspondence Secretary: Elsa Webb (Triune
Zone)
Nominating Committee: Alice Schuman-Chairman
(Albany Zone), Cecile Walker (Bronx/Westchester Zone), Doris Scheer (Queens Zone) Junior Pastoral Counselor:Rev. Travis Yee
We wish God's blessings and our
sincere expression of gratitude to all of the outgoing officers for
their many years of service to the women of the Atlantic District
LWML. May God bless all of you as you continue your walk with Him.

Your Calendar!
November
6, 2010
Lutheran
Social Services of New York is pleased to announce that it will
sponsor its first special version of the centuries-old tradition
"Christmas Market". On
November 6, 2010 Trinity Lutheran Church, Hicksville, NY will be the
site of Lutheran Social Services' Congregation
LIFE Christmas Market.Agency proceeds from this special event will be used to support the
newly created Congregation LIFE Fund. Congregations will be able to
apply for these grant funds to support their social ministry efforts. Congregations
will also have the opportunity to be one of the many anticipated
Congregation LIFE Christmas
Market vendors. Individual
proceeds will be retained by the participating congregations. For
more information and how your congregation can become part of this
event contact: Bonnie Olesen, Event Coordinator.
The
History of Christmas Markets Each
year Christmas Markets spring up around Germany in the weeks before
the Christmas holidays, signaling the beginning of Advent. The
centuries-old tradition reaches back to a time when regular seasonal
markets took place throughout the year. Usually, the Christmas
Markets were held around the city's main church to attract
church-goers. Throughout the years, each Christmas Market has stayed
true to its own particularities, with each specializing on local
delicacies and traditional products. Christmas Markets serve much
the same function that they have for centuries - as a festive
meeting place for locals and a market for homemade Christmas items,
decorations, holiday foods and other traditional Christmas
festivities.

MUSLIM OUTREACH LAY BIBLE
INSTITUTE
RESCHEDULED
| Concordia Seminary has rescheduled its Lay
Bible Institute for Saturday, August 7, from 9:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. on
the topic
of Muslim outreach. This workshop will be led by Dr. John Loum, director
of the
Ethnic Immigrant Institute of Theology (EIIT), who has worked among
Muslims in
Europe, Africa, and the United States for more than 20 years.
Participants will be provided with a unique
perspective
on one of the fastest growing religions in America. One year ago, the
Pope
publicly recognized Islam and the Muslims by stating, "There are more
Muslims in
the world than Roman Catholics." This public acknowledgment has
reinvigorated
the Muslim community in its outreach efforts. Consequently, Muslims in
America
have been approaching Christians of all backgrounds with the full intent
of
conversion. Countless Christians are embracing Islam each year in
America. This
has serious implications for the Christian faith and the proclamation of
the
Gospel. The sessions will include various topics on Islam and what you
need to
know about your Muslim neighbors, co-workers, or even the Muslim your
child may
date in the future. All denominations are welcome to this
workshop. The cost for the Lay Bible Institute is $20,
plus $6.50
for an optional lunch ticket in the Seminary's dining hall. The deadline
to
register is July 25. To register or for more information, contact
Continuing
Education and Parish Services at 314-505-7486 or ce@csl.edu.
