Letter from the President
Host and Guest

It's one of the most basic prayers most of us have ever prayed: "Come, Lord Jesus, be our Guest, and let Thy gifts to us be blest; Amen." In the world of constant movement many of us call home, my question to you and your families is whether you invite the Lord Jesus to dine with you - at the McDonald's Drive-Thru, or Panda Express, at school lunch, at the office, or as you grab some snacks called supper after filling the tank with gas. My hunch is that "Table Grace" is in a pretty sad state of disrepair among us, for reasons not the least of which is that we don't sit down at a common family table to eat more than a few times a week.

As the pictures of food arriving in Haiti grab the headlines, crowds circling the truck-distributors grasping and leaning forward for some morsel, we are forced to consider the debilitated level of our own gratitude for daily bread. What I would ask us to consider anew is whether and how we are forming our church communities to gather for renewal and refreshment around the Altar.

Haiti Earthquake Response
The initial response to Dr. Benke's request to help in the Haiti relief efforts has been very generous, and as our thoughts and prayers continue for the people of Haiti, disaster relief plans to reach out in the weeks and months ahead are currently in process.  As these plans are formalized, updates will be posted on the Atlantic District website homepage.

BE TRANSFORMED!  2010 Festival of Workshops
The Atlantic District Festival of Workshops will be held on Saturday, March 6, at Concordia College, Bronxville.  The District joyfully offers this yearly day of resources in the hope that lay leaders and church workers will "BE TRANSFORMED" and re-ignited in their mission and ministry.

The District's Task Forces initiated the Festival of Workshops in 2002 to provide ongoing training, resources and opportunities for networking to church members.  Workshops are led by noted teachers, lecturers and recognized experts, as well as District congregational leaders who share their expertise in a broad range of ministries.

The keynote speaker this year will be Mary E. Hilgendorf, Ph.D., Professor of Education, Concordia University, Wisconsin.

A complete list of workshops and registration information can be found here.

Registration is $25 per person if received by February 19th; the fee is $30 per person thereafter.  Morning hospitality and lunch are included.  For more about the Festival of Workshops, please contact Carol Mittelstaedt at carolmittel@aol.com or 914-337-5700, x 6.

Mission Grants Update

Mission Grant #13 - He Lives - $1,000 - PAID - PRAISE THE LORD!

Mission Grant #14 - Cross-Cultural Youth Expansion - $4,000

In the past year, St. Peter's in Brooklyn has established Ablaze Covenant outreach into the Latino, Bengali and Caribbean mission zones of Brooklyn and Queens, with more youth and children drawn to the ministries.  Cross-cultural youth expansion will integrate the mission zones into the neighborhood/church youth outreach for the greatest connection of the Gospel to young peoples' lives through increased fellowship, training, experiences and worship. (Sponsored by Women of God on the Move, St. Peter's Lutheran Church, Brooklyn, NY.)  We need $538.72 in mite donations to pay Mission Grant #14.

Mission Grant #15 - Teaching/Learning World Religions and Evangelism Tools to Strategically Reach the Unreached - $6,935

Concordia Institute for World Religions & Evangelism (CIWRE), Concordia College, NY is equipping church professionals, laity and church vocation students to learn hands-on evangelistic tools and world religions in the perspective of reaching the unreached.  Learning other religions is unavoidable in American mosaic of diverse religiosity.  (Sponsored by Rev. Rethinasamy, Director of CIWRE, Concordia College, NY.)

Muslim Outreach Conference at St. Louis Seminary
Concordia Seminary will host a one day Lay Bible Institute on Saturday, March 20, from 9:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. on the topic of Muslim outreach. This workshop will be led by Dr. John Loum, director of the Ethnic Immigrant Institute of Theology (EIIT), who has worked among Muslims in Europe, Africa, and the United States for more than 20 years.

Participants will be provided with a unique perspective on one of the fastest growing religions in America. One year ago, the Pope publicly recognized Islam and the Muslims by stating, "There are more Muslims in the world than Roman Catholics." This public acknowledgment has reinvigorated the Muslim community in its outreach efforts. Consequently, Muslims in America have been approaching Christians of all backgrounds with the full intent of conversion. Countless Christians are embracing Islam each year in America. This constitutes a dilemma and has serious implications for the Christian faith and the proclamation of the Gospel. The sessions will include various topics on Islam and what you need to know about your Muslim neighbors, co-workers, or even the Muslim your child may date in the future.  All denominations are welcome to this workshop.

The cost for the Lay Bible Institute is $20, plus $6.50 for an optional lunch ticket in the Seminary's dining hall. To register or for more information, contact Continuing Education and Parish Services at 314-505-7486 or ce@csl.edu.
