Progress
As we rise on 1/1/10 to face the new decade, it's
a great time to consider whether we're getting anywhere and/or going
anywhere. As I looked out at the congregation on New Year's Eve and
we dialogued about resolutions and outlooks, it became clear that to a
17 year old, the next decade is all about hope and next steps -
graduation, first big job, living on your own, maybe marriage, maybe
starting a family. Major stuff, entering the world and making a
difference stuff. Whereas for a guy like me, I'm thinking I'd like to
stay alive and alert and be relatively healthy. Hanging in there
stuff. Are we getting anywhere? Are we going anywhere? What do we
share in common in that Lutheran Christian endeavor for the next year
and decade of years?
Certainly for starters we share a common destiny -
by grace our lives have already been hidden with Christ in God
(Colossians 3:2), which is a great definition of "saved." We are
safe, secure, inside the very being of God eternally because of Christ,
our Lord. We are perfectly righteous, holy, redeemed and restored, in
Christ. Nothing needs to be added.

BE TRANSFORMED! Announcing the 2010 Festival of Workshops
|
The Atlantic District Festival of Workshops will be held on Saturday, March 6, at Concordia College, Bronxville. The District joyfully offers this yearly day of resources in the hope that lay leaders and church workers will "BE TRANSFORMED" and re-ignited in their mission and ministry.
The District's Task Forces initiated the Festival of Workshops in 2002 to provide ongoing training, resources and opportunities for networking to church members. Workshops are led by noted teachers, lecturers and recognized experts, as well as District congregational leaders who share their expertise in a broad range of ministries.
The keynote speaker this year will be Mary E. Hilgendorf, Ph.D., Professor of Education, Concordia University, Wisconsin. Here is a sampling of workshop offerings and presenters:
- Fostering a Culture of Generosity: How to encourage excelling in the grace of giving, by Pastor Vic Nelson
- Your Church's Property, Workers and other Assets--and how to protect them, by Michael Jakob and Michael Colacicco
- Say Yes to No: A parenting workshop by Carol Mittelstaedt
- Websites for Churches: Why are we doing it that way?, a panel discussion by Pastors Robert Hartwell and Jonathan Priest, and Naresh Seoprasad
- A Tour of the Virtual Homebase of the Atlantic District (ad-lcms.org), tour guide, Jennn Partlow.
Other workshops will include the Transforming Churches Network (TCN) initiative; an overview of Vacation Bible School (VBS) ministries; House Church Planting; and Missional Worship/Worship Studies.
A complete list of workshops and registration information will be available on the home page of the District's website, www.ad-lcms.org, by mid-January. Several workshops will be offered twice during the day to give people the opportunity to attend a variety of programs that interest them.
Registration is $25 per person if received by February 19th; the fee is $30 per person thereafter. Morning hospitality and lunch are included. For more about the Festival of Workshops, please contact Carol Mittelstaedt at carolmittel@aol.com or 914-337-5700, x 6.

Mission Grants Update
Mission Grant #11 - Beautiful Feet -$5,000
Mission Grant
#12 - North Country Mission Project - $3,000
PRAISE THE
LORD! These grants have been fully funded. Thank you to all who contribute to Atlantic
District mites.
Mission Grant #13 - He Lives - $1,000
We desire to reach out to the staff
and residents of Four Seasons Nursing Home and Rehabilitation Center
by spreading the Gospel through an Easter presentation, and to give a Bible to
each staff member and resident of the facility. Funds would be used to
purchase Bibles as well as costumes and props for the presentation. (Sponsored
by Sheryl Schulze, LWML member, Brooklyn,
NY.) We need $861.17 in mite
donations to pay Mission Grant #13.
Mission Grant #14 - Cross-Cultural Youth
Expansion - $4,000
In the past year, St. Peter's in
Brooklyn has established Ablaze Covenant outreach into the Latino, Bengali and
Caribbean mission zones of Brooklyn and Queens,
with more youth and children drawn to the ministries. Cross-cultural youth
expansion will integrate the mission zones into the neighborhood/church youth
outreach for the greatest connection of the Gospel to young peoples' lives
through increased fellowship, training, experiences and worship. (Sponsored by
Women of God on the Move, St. Peter's Lutheran
Church, Brooklyn, NY.)
Three (3) months of this biennium remain for
us to fund ALL the mission grants that were selected by the delegates in 2008. In
order to meet our goal, we need to receive $9,916.80 in donations. We thank the
Lord for the support you have given us in the past. Please continue to send
your mite money to Virginia Wirsing,
Financial Secretary, 4 Garden Lane,
Yaphank, NY 11980.

An Invitation to Join the District's "Stop, Drop & Pray" Team
|
"We do not make requests from you because we are righteous, but because of your great mercy. O Lord, listen! O Lord, forgive! O Lord, hear and act!" Daniel 9:18-19
Do you believe in God's power through prayer to dramatically increase the effectiveness of our mission and kingdom work? Are you a member of the Atlantic District Mission Society's "Stop, drop and pray" network? If not, I invite you to join our prayer team today in seeking out God's blessing and provision for all our outreach efforts. We seek to faithfully partner with the Lord in the essential work of extending the kingdom of God on earth. To enroll, simply contact me at carol.mittelstaedt@ad-lcms.org or call me at 914-337-5700, ext. 6.
When you join "Stop, drop and pray," you'll receive a free weekly E-Letter reminding you to stop what you are doing and take time out to pray for specific mission projects and events throughout the District. As you read through the weekly prayers you will add your voice to others asking God's help for our missionaries and church members so that they may Engage the World with the Gospel of Hope and bring the knowledge and love of Christ Jesus to the unchurched in their communities.
We would love to pray for your special project, too! If your congregation is engaged in an outreach initiative or has a special event planned, please let me know so that I can add it to our prayers.
Blessings!
