Letter from the President
Foretaste of the Feast to Come

For eighteen plus years I've been eating "on the cuff."  I'm a party crasher.  Of course, in my case, Judy and I are usually invited, so technically we're not crashing.  But your anniversaries, ordinations, installations, building dedications, fundraisers, agency awards nights, and general excuses to have a meal in the Lutheran tradition are my grazing grounds.  For me, weekends aren't made for Michelob - they're made for lasagna, pepper steak, souvlaki, seafood salad, orange ruffy, roti and curry goat, rice and peas, rice and beans, three hundred fifteen versions of chicken, salads, rolls, the famous brownies of Mrs. G or Mrs. R, the obligatory cake, and the Italian sampler cookies with maybe a canola or two thrown in for good measure.  Seven or eight thousand calories down the line, I waddle forth into the world, content and well-fed.

Of course, the real blessing of all those gatherings is the people who put the love into the food, the people of God desiring the festal board to be exquisitely arranged, the people of God saying "Thank you, Lord" in meat and drink and hospitality.

Transforming Congregations Network (TCN)
We are excited about the Transforming Churches Network, or TCN for short. We are gearing up for some Consultations in the Fall on Long Island and are also excited about the Pastors and Leaders Learning Communities which are springing up around the District. The purpose of TCN is to transform existing congregations into ones that are regularly and consistently "making new disciples who make new disciples."

Please pray regularly for TCN - include it in your private prayer life and also in the public worship life of your church. Please suggest to you prayer group or prayer chain that they pray regularly for TCN that many churches be transformed and many new folks be brought into the kingdom of God.

Mission Grants Update

Mission Grant #10 - "We Hear, Each in Our Own Native Language" - $2,200
As our Lord continues to bring unchurched speakers of Spanish to us (the Bronx being the Borough of New York City with the highest number of speakers of Spanish) and as we endeavor to reach all people with the Gospel, we want to translate materials from English into Spanish.  Since God has gifted us with people who can translate, we want to purchase equipment that will allow for the simultaneous translation of the Scripture readings, sermons and prayers during the worship services for Spanish people to increase their understanding of the Good News of Jesus Christ while they are in a worship setting. (Sponsored by Ladies in Prayer and Service, Redeemer Lutheran, Bronx, NY) We continue to collect mites to fund this grant.

Mission Grant #11 - Beautiful Feet -$5,000
Today's college students are the next generation of missionaries, pastors and congregational leaders. Beautiful Feet brings hundreds of college students together to learn about missions around the world, how they can be involved, and builds them up to both lead mission education on their campuses and serve the Lord and His church around the world on the mission field. (Sponsored by LCMS World Mission)
........

We thank the Lord for the support you have given us in the past. Consider having a special cake sale for mites. Please continue to send your mite money to:
Virginia Wirsing, Financial Secretary
4 Garden Lane
Yaphank, NY 11980.

LCC Honors Judy Benke at October Gala
Each year, LCC honors a special volunteer as "Silent Samaritan of the year"-someone who has dedicated extensive time and talents to carry out our mission to be a "healing ministry of the Church" and whose work has made a large impact on those we serve. LCC serves many people who are unable to afford full fees for counseling. The name "Silent Samaritan" comes from our program of funding to help these most vulnerable people in need of healing. This year's awardee is a wonderful example of the caliber of volunteers LCC has been fortunate to have over the years.

Lutheran Counseling Center is proud to honor Mrs. Judith Benke as its Silent Samaritan Awardee. Click here for full article.
