Letter from the President
The Main Attraction

In this rainy summer, Judy and I have gone to two professional golf tournaments in the rain.  Twice drenched, we have witnessed the same incredible sight.  The pros all have great swings, and all hit the ball a mile.  People following along are astounded at what their favorites are doing with that little white ball.  It's nice and relaxing, a walk in the park for aficionados.

Except at a certain time of the day, for about four hours, a human wave washes over the course.  Kids dragging parents, people clapping and yelling, an enormous international and inter-racial throng, way younger than the rest of the fans, an African-American woman in wheelchair being piloted bumpily alongside the fairways, thousands and thousands running ahead, angling for a spot closest to the action - it's quite a sight. What is this?

Tiger Woods.

Simply amazing.  The "Main Attraction."

Transforming Congregations Network (TCN)
We are excited about the Transforming Churches Network, or TCN for short. We are gearing up for some Consultations in the Fall on Long Island and are also excited about the Pastors and Leaders Learning Communities which are springing up around the District. The purpose of TCN is to transform existing congregations into ones that are regularly and consistently "making new disciples who make new disciples."

Please pray regularly for TCN - include it in your private prayer life and also in the public worship life of your church. Please suggest to you prayer group or prayer chain that they pray regularly for TCN that many churches be transformed and many new folks be brought into the kingdom of God.

Mission Grants Update

Mission Grant #10 - "We Hear, Each in Our Own Native Language" - $2,200
As our Lord continues to bring unchurched speakers of Spanish to us (the Bronx being the Borough of New York City with the highest number of speakers of Spanish) and as we endeavor to reach all people with the Gospel, we want to translate materials from English into Spanish.  Since God has gifted us with people who can translate, we want to purchase equipment that will allow for the simultaneous translation of the Scripture readings, sermons and prayers during the worship services for Spanish people to increase their understanding of the Good News of Jesus Christ while they are in a worship setting. (Sponsored by Ladies in Prayer and Service, Redeemer Lutheran, Bronx, NY) We need $46.55 in mite donations to pay this grant.

Mission Grant #11 - Beautiful Feet -$5,000
Today's college students are the next generation of missionaries, pastors and congregational leaders. Beautiful Feet brings hundreds of college students together to learn about missions around the world, how they can be involved, and builds them up to both lead mission education on their campuses and serve the Lord and His church around the world on the mission field. (Sponsored by LCMS World Mission)
........

Seven (7) months of this biennium remain for us to fund ALL the mission grants that were selected by the delegates in 2008. In order to meet our goal, we need to receive $5,838.75 in donations. We thank the Lord for the support you have given us in the past. Please continue to send your mite money to

LCC Honors Judy Benke at October Gala
Each year, LCC honors a special volunteer as "Silent Samaritan of the year"-someone who has dedicated extensive time and talents to carry out our mission to be a "healing ministry of the Church" and whose work has made a large impact on those we serve. LCC serves many people who are unable to afford full fees for counseling. The name "Silent Samaritan" comes from our program of funding to help these most vulnerable people in need of healing. This year's awardee is a wonderful example of the caliber of volunteers LCC has been fortunate to have over the years.

Lutheran Counseling Center is proud to honor Mrs. Judith Benke as its Silent Samaritan Awardee. Click here for full article and invitation to the event.
