Letter from the President
Rain, Rain Go Away

They say there's a drought in Seattle.  No rain for a month.  That's no surprise to us in New York - we know what's going on.  There's been some kind of switching delay at a higher level, and we ARE Seattle.  As Sacred Scripture tells us, "The rain falls on the just and the unjust."

True enough.  But when it falls on us EVERY day we start to wonder what we've done to deserve all these gray and lowering skies.  Judy and I were at the US Golf Open on the first day, Thursday.  It was not only a rain-out.  We had determined to follow Tiger Woods, and he was on the point of land farthest from the clubhouse when the skies opened up to their maximum.  2 ½ miles out, and 2 ½ miles back - in the mud.

The weather lets us know, underneath all the grumbling, that we are dependent, that we are creatures and not the Creator, that we don't get to make all the decisions and we don't get to control every aspect of our destinies or daily lives.

Transforming Congregations Network (TCN)
We are excited about the Transforming Churches Network, or TCN for short. We are gearing up for some Consultations in the Fall on Long Island and are also excited about the Pastors and Leaders Learning Communities which are springing up around the District. The purpose of TCN is to transform existing congregations into ones that are regularly and consistently "making new disciples who make new disciples."

Please pray regularly for TCN - include it in your private prayer life and also in the public worship life of your church. Please suggest to you prayer group or prayer chain that they pray regularly for TCN that many churches be transformed and many new folks be brought into the kingdom of God.

ATLANTIC DISTRICT LUTHERAN WOMEN'S MISSIONARY LEAGUE
Mission Grants Update

Mission Grant #9 - Boy's Foster Home in South India - $4,000
PRAISE THE LORD! This grant has been fully funded.

Mission Grant #10
- "We Hear, Each in Our Own Native Language" - $2,200

As our Lord continues to bring unchurched speakers of Spanish to us (the Bronx being the Borough of New York City with the highest number of speakers of Spanish) and as we endeavor to reach all people with the Gospel, we want to translate materials from English into Spanish.  Since God has gifted us with people who can translate, we want to purchase equipment that will allow for the simultaneous translation of the Scripture readings, sermons and prayers during the worship services for Spanish people to increase their understanding of the Good News of Jesus Christ while they are in a worship setting (sponsored by Ladies in Prayer and Service, Redeemer Lutheran, Bronx, NY.)

++++++++++++++++

The summer months are coming and we must remember to "feed" our mite boxes regularly. Nine months of this biennium remain for us to fund ALL the mission grants that were selected by the delegates in 2008. We thank the Lord for the support you have given us in the past. Please continue to send your mite money to:
 Virginia Wirsing, Financial Secretary,
4 Garden Lane, Yaphank, NY 11980.
