Letter from the President
GOOD SHEPHERD

At the front of the parish I serve, almost out of sight behind a large wooden beam, two stained glass windows give away the identity of a faith community.  One is a depiction of St. Peter, the other a depiction of Christ the Good Shepherd.  Remembering the Risen Lord's instruction to Peter to "feed my lambs," those coupled windows were described to me when I arrived in Brooklyn as the tribute to the memory of "the Sainted Dr. Arthur Brunn, our Pastor."  I arrived 25 years after Dr. Brunn died, but he was still "our Pastor."

Know what?  After I'd been there awhile, I felt as though he were MY pastor as well.  So formed in the faith received through his instruction and training were the long-time members that when they spoke it was as though he were there with an arm on their shoulder coaching them along.

Transforming Congregations Network (TCN)
We are excited about the Transforming Churches Network, or TCN for short. We are gearing up for some Consultations in the Fall on Long Island and are also excited about the Pastors and Leaders Learning Communities which are springing up around the District. The purpose of TCN is to transform existing congregations into ones that are regularly and consistently "making new disciples who make new disciples."

Please pray regularly for TCN - include it in your private prayer life and also in the public worship life of your church. Please suggest to you prayer group or prayer chain that they pray regularly for TCN that many churches be transformed and many new folks be brought into the kingdom of God.

Mission Grants Update

Mission Grant #9 - Boy's Foster Home in South India - $4,000
This foster home for boys began in 2002 as a result of Atlantic District donations for Tsunami Relief.  Many of these boys lost one parent in the Tsunami. Three boys come from a fishing village that was devastated. Although brought up Hindu, all have been taught to pray Christian prayers to start and end each day and at meals, and all attend Sunday worship at the local Lutheran church. While Tsunami support is almost depleted, we are committed to these 18 boys until they graduate the public high school they attend across the street from the home (sponsored by Janet George/Judy Benke - Health and Human Care Task Force, Atlantic District).  We need $916.47 in mite donations to pay Grant #9.

Continue to send your mite money to Virginia Wirsing, Financial Secretary, 4 Garden Lane, Yaphank, NY 11980. THANK YOU FOR YOUR CONTINUED SUPPORT.

LWML Convention, Portland, Oregon

LOOK! Look forward to the inspirational and exciting weekend awaiting you in Portland at the 2009 LWML convention. It is not too late to register if you haven't already done so.  Visit www.lwml.org for more information on activities and registration.

This month, our last before the convention, let us lift up in prayer the Host Committee and Convention Programming Committee as they finalize all the details for the June 25-28 gathering. Let us pray for LWML President Jan Wendorf as she prepares to chair the convention and for the speakers and proclaimers as they lead us in understanding our theme, Look to the Hills...God Reigns. Let us pray that each of our hearts will be open to new experiences and friendships. As final preparations are made, we give thanks for the opportunities this convention presents for each attendee.

2007-2009 Mission Goal Met

The LWML has exceeded its $1.7 million mission grant goal for 2007-2009 by $75, 730.17. The mite goal, which helps support missions all over the nation and the world, was reached through generous contributions from members of the organization's 40 districts and an anonymous memorial gift.  PRAISE THE LORD!

Lutherans CARE: Providing Christ's Love Wherever Needed
At the end of March, Bob Dowen and Pastor Derek Lecakes returned from New Orleans where they and 35 other volunteers provided a week of hands-on assistance rebuilding homes and lives that were devastated by Hurricane Katrina in 2005.

Known as Lutherans CARE and based out of Immanuel Lutheran Church, Niskayuna, this was the group's eighth trip. Bob's description of the scope of their mission follows.
"Hurricane Katrina devastated the Gulf Coast Region including the city of New Orleans. With this event in mind, three pastors from the Capital District wanted to help.  In three weeks a group of 14 people traveled to New Orleans. After viewing the devastation of the hurricanes and subsequent flooding, a long term effort was needed and thus Lutherans CARE (Capital Area Relief Effort) was born. Lutherans CARE is a faith-based group of volunteers who seek to Provide Christ's Love wherever needed. They have mucked out houses, demoed homes, replaced wiring, plumbing, sheetrock, flooring and more. Lutherans CARE goes down with a mix of contractors and simple volunteers to help people recover their lives and homes.

Lutherans CARE helped St. John Church and School reopen to serve the community before public schools had opened.   To date they have helped 22 families and 5 local churches recover after the storm. Over 150 people have made trips totaling over 6000 work hours. Lutherans CARE committed to make 2 trips a year for 5 years.  An incredible amount has been done, but there is still much to do now almost 4 years later.
In addition Lutherans CARE also helps out locally in the Capital Region to assist those who are in need and do not have the full means to get things done on their home." -Bob Dowen, Bethlehem, Delmar

For a vivid account of the latest trip, the day-by-day work and the warm reception they received, check out blogger Jessy Wilson's postings, photos and videos at http://Bethlehemlutheran.blogspot.com/.
