Take Advantage of the "Dog Days of
Summer" to Plan your Recovery Success
Business-wise, the month of August is typically brings some
down-time. Orders and transactions drop
off as people turn their attention to long-awaited vacations. That is why August is the perfect time to get
out your business plan and update it for the fourth quarter and beyond.
This year, reviewing your business plan takes on a special
imperative. As the country begins to
crawl out of a deep recession, do you have a plan that matches the new
reality? Are the assumptions on which
your plan is based still valid? If you
expect things to go back like they were before the economic melt-down, you may
be sorely surprised. It's a different
business environment we see out there:
-
Business mangers are expected to proceed
cautiously, with a stern eye on cash flow. Does your product or service still satisfy an imperative need? Are you prepared to address possible sales
obstacles, such as requests for delayed payment or financing?
-
Some traditional markets will have diminished needs
while others, like energy and health care, are envisioned to take off. Have you taken a close look at your
marketplace recently - will it recover in a healthy fashion, or will it
continue to be hampered by the downturn? How can your products or services address a need in markets expected to
enjoy funding and growth over the next decade?
-
What does the competitive landscape look like
now? Some of your competitors may have
gone out of business and there may be new ones. Do you have a current competitive analysis and sales plan for dealing
with this?
-
Have you invested in proven programs like ISO,
Six Sigma, Lean Manufacturing or Malcolm Baldrige to drive down costs while
enhancing quality, increasing productivity and boosting customer retention?
The "Dog Days of Summer" are an excellent time to "dust off"
and update your business plans. There
are opportunities in the midst of change. Make sure your organization is positioned to take advantage of them. |

Adapting to change.
In the struggle for
