Building a Culture of Accountability

Shaping corporate culture is no easy task.  Building a culture of accountability, however, doesn't have to be a white-knuckle, white-water rafting experience.  A lack of "accountability" translates to mediocrity at best.  At worst-excessive operating costs, lost sales, and even bankruptcy.

"How do you know that accountability is an issue?"  Just ask yourself some rather fundamental questions.  Is your firm achieving its objectives?  Is "good enough" the norm?  How often do you hear employees say "it's not my job?"

A culture of accountability is essential in good times.  In tough times it translates to survival.  People need to step up to the plate, and put their job descriptions aside.  Everyone must focus on the business.

Twelve steps to accountability:

  1. Create a risk tolerant environment.
  2. Focus on goals and objectives at all levels.
  3. Involve individuals in goal setting.
  4. Clarify levels of empowerment and responsibility.
  5. Conduct frequent management review meetings.
  6. Implement a measurement and reporting program.
  7. Select process owners and hold their feet to the fire.
  8. Tie management activities to results.
  9. Tie goal attainment to the performance appraisal process.
  10. Lead by example, and be a performance coach to your staff.
  11. Recognize and reward goal achievement-and make it public.
  12. Make reinforcement a way of life-institutionalize it.
Remember, you don't shape corporate culture over night.  The larger the organization, the longer it takes.  And if fear is rampant in your organization - because of a command and control management style - it will take even longer.
