Living History

To prepare for LSTC's 50th anniversary celebration, I've been given access to a corner of the building that few people ever see - the archives. Housed on the third floor of the JKM Library (behind the locked cage), it reminds me of the final scene from "The Raiders of the Lost Ark".
Instead of wooden crates in a vast warehouse, the archive room has rows of carefully marked floor-to-ceiling metal shelves full of gray storage boxes, carefully marked with letters, numbers and a brief description of what's inside. Inside the storage boxes are carefully marked file folders with LSTC's accumulated history.
And there are the items that don't fit into the carefully-marked boxes: framed photos, old posters, and other items bequeathed to the seminary that tell part of LSTC's history. (I'll let you know if I come across the Ark of the Covenant.)
The theme for the anniversary year is "Many Voices, One Story." It would be easy to say that the "one story" we're lifting up is LSTC's story, but that would not reflect the "so that" of LSTC. This seminary was formed 50 years ago so that the life-giving story of God's love in Jesus Christ would be told to each new generation.
You are the many voices, the living history of the school, its "so that." This year, please share your stories - of your time here, of how it changed you and/or how you changed LSTC, and how you see lives changed by the one story you came here to learn how to share. Send them to me or post them on LSTC's Facebook page
Come and be part of the many ways we will celebrate both LSTC's 50 years of forming visionary leaders and the future of LSTC's mission as we install James Nieman as its seventh president.
Blessings,
Jan Boden
Director of Communications and Marketing

You are invited to inaugural weekend events
On October 27 and 28, the Lutheran School of Theology at Chicago will celebrate the inauguration of its new president, the Rev. James Nieman, Ph.D. On Sunday, October 28, James Nieman will be installed as LSTC's seventh president during a Service of Holy Communion at 4:00 p.m. at Rockefeller Memorial Chapel, 5850 South Woodlawn Avenue, Chicago.
To mark the occasion of his inauguration, President Nieman has invited three scholars in theological education and three recent LSTC graduates to explore the question: In the days ahead, what sort of ministerial wisdom will best give shape to a fuller witness to the gospel by all the faithful? The free, public event takes place on Saturday, October 27, at 1:30 p.m., at LSTC. [Read more.]

Many Voices, One Story -- LSTC celebrates its first 50 years
In 1962, the Lutheran Church in America (LCA) was formed from a merger of the Augustana Church (1860), the AELC (1872), the Suomi Synod (1890) and the ULCA (1918). Dr. Franklin Clark Fry is its first president. The impending merger motivated the Midwestern seminaries of those churches to take action to move toward a merger of their own.
Read more of the story as told by several chroniclers: Robert Marshall, first bishop of the Illinois Synod of the LCA and second president of the LCA; Wesley Fuerst, Professor of Old Testament and the second academic dean of LSTC; and Kathleen D. "Kadi" Billman, John H. Tietjen Professor of Pastoral Ministry: Pastoral Theology and dean and vice president for academic affairs, 2000-2010.

ELCA "Glocal" Mission Gathering at LSTC Sept. 14-15
God's work in mission always propels us to encounter the neighbor, particularly in the stranger. ELCA Glocal Mission Gatherings equip us for God's work in today's global and local realities as well as their "glocal" intersections.
What is mission? Who is the neighbor? Let's consider these questions together as they relate to our migrating and immigrating world. Come join us for mission conversations around the realities of the world we live in today.
Genesis 4.9: Then the Lord said to Cain, 'where is your brother Abel?' He said, 'I do not know; am I my brother's keeper?'
The Glocal Mission Gathering (GMG) gathers congregational leaders for a day and a half of worship, workshops and sharing around global and local mission. [ Read more. ]

Want your gift to do more for LSTC? Be a part of the Helge Annual Fund Challenge
Thanks to a generous matching grant from Mark and Kathy Helge, your new, renewed and increased gifts to the LSTC Annual Fund can do even more for the seminary.
How does it work? If you've never given to the LSTC Annual Fund, every dollar you give will be matched. Or if you gave to the LSTC Annual Fund as recently as June 2010, but not since then, every dollar you give will be matched. Or if you faithfully give to LSTC's Annual Fund each year and can increase the amount you gave before June 2011, that amount will be matched dollar for dollar.
The Helges want to encourage everyone to give to the Annual Fund - not just once, but a second time. If you responded to the Matching Gift Challenge after it was announced in November 2011 and want to contribute again, whatever was matched on your most recent gift, will be matched again this year!
For example, if you gave a new gift of $100 to LSTC between November 2011 and June 2012, it was matched 100%. If you give $100 to LSTC between July 2012 and June 30, 2013, it will be matched 100%. The same applies for the amount matched on renewed and increased gifts.
Your generous gifts to the Annual Fund make a difference every day, for every student, faculty and staff member at LSTC. Thank you for your generosity!
You can give online right now.
