Mission Statement

The Lutheran School of Theology at Chicago forms visionary leaders to bear witness to the good news of Jesus Christ.

Couryard Lillies

Molefe TseleBearing witness around the globe

Where else would this happen but at LSTC? One afternoon in early August, everyone on campus was invited to a brief reception in LSTC's Grand Hallway. It was for an international alumnus visiting Chicago, the Rev. Dr. Molefe Tsele and his wife, Modiehi Bookholane. Dr. Tsele now serves as South Africa's Ambassador to Jordan.

After Acting President Hougen introduced him, Dr. Tsele, told us what LSTC meant to him and to his family. After years of being apart from one another because of his work in parishes and his efforts to end apartheid, his years at LSTC provided "family time - a time when we were all together."

He spoke eloquently about how studying theology has served him well as a leader of the South African Council of Churches and now, in his role as ambassador to Jordan. "You never know where your work in the church will lead you," he said. [Read more about Molefe Tsele.]

Before I worked at LSTC, my concept of the global church was limited to the Global Mission inserts that appeared in my congregation's bulletins and to the stories I read in The Lutheran magazine. At LSTC, I have received the gift of getting to know many brothers and sisters in Christ from around the world as students and as colleagues.

These children of God show me how far-reaching LSTC's ministry is. They open my heart and make real my prayers for the many places where they witness to the good news of Jesus Christ

Blessings to you in your ministry.

Following Jesus ... to East Timor

by Inge Ruth Lempp
M. Div. , Class 1997

Inge Ruth LemppWhen I left LSTC in April 1999, I did not know what lay ahead. Following a call I felt in my heart.  I resigned from the position of director for international student affairs, work I loved and was passionate about, got up and left. Was this a crazy thing to do? It was scary for sure, and I prayed hard it was Jesus' call that I was hearing.

I came to East Timor as part of an election observer team, the East Timor Action Network (ETAN), part of the International Federation for East Timor (IFET), a network of solidarity groups from around the world. We were an independent grass roots organization that received United Nations accreditation as election observers.

On August 30, 1999, the vast majority (86.7%) of the people of East Timor voted for independence after 24 years of brutal military occupation by Indonesia. Before departing the country, Indonesia looted and burned, leaving up to 80% of all infrastructure destroyed, and hundreds of thousands as refugees or internally displaced persons (IDPs). Every gift counts. Every gift makes a difference to LSTC students. Help form visionary leaders who will bear witness to the good news of Jesus Christ. Make a gift online.
