I don't want to run this race in vain
Carol Burnett's variety show was one of my favorite TV programs when I was growing up. She always ended the show by singing, "I'm so glad we had this time together, just to have a laugh or sing a song, seems we just get started and before you know it, comes the time we have to say 'so long.'"
That song always pops into my head at this time of year, when I must say goodbye to most of the students and any of my colleagues who are making transitions.
At the end of the last worship service of the school year, we sang another traveling song. Pastor Joan Beck gathered us together in the center of the chapel for lay our hands on those leaving the community and we prayed. Then Senior Katy Harder began to sing, "Guide my feet, while I run this race. Guide my feet, while I run this race. Guide my feet, while I run this race, for I don't want to run this race in vain."
Things really got fun as she, her classmate Brian Robison, and Pastor Joan Beck taught us a simple dance to accompany the song. We danced in a tight, comfortable circle, arms over shoulders, laughing at our missteps. Then Brian guided us, still dancing, out of the chapel.
There we all were, standing outside the chapel, so near the door, a little teary, as Junior Alex Raabe said it: "Go in peace, serve the Lord." What else could we say, but "Thanks be to God"?
Blessings,

June online conversation will explore wealth and poverty in the Bible and American Culture
During the month of June, LSTC is offering the opportunity to participate in online conversations with other people of faith to consider how Christians should think about and act on the economic disparities that continue to widen in the United States and around the world.
This online conversation facilitated by Dr. Carol Schersten LaHurd will explore multiple meanings and views of wealth and poverty through biblical texts, theological and social commentary. We will look at ecclesiastical studies such as the ELCA's 1999 Social Statement on Economic Life, Sufficient, Sustainable Livelihood for All, and Pope John Paul II's 1991 Encyclical letter Centesimus Annus. American literature and culture will also be used to give context to the issues we will discuss.
Cost to enroll is $100 and limited to 15 participants. Participants will need access to a computer and a high speed internet connection in order to participate in the course. Course provides 15 contact hours, 1.5 CEUs.
For information about enrollment, contact leadershipconference@lstc.edu or call 773-256-0741. [ Read more ]

New venture survey
LSTC is currently working on developing several cooperative ventures with Valparaiso University. You can help us determine the potential for the Valparaiso University Graduate School of Business developing a business program on our campus that would provide accredited business courses for our students and others in the community.
We are looking at three possibilities: a single course (Maymester), a graduate certificate (7 courses, which could be combined with our MATS program) or an MBA (which could stand alone or be done as a dual degree program). Please share your opinion by taking the survey Valparaiso has prepared. It will take less than five minutes!
