Hearing the (good) word
How many sermons have you heard? In the more than 13 years I've been at LSTC, I've attended chapel just about every day it's been held. I've heard faculty preach and I've heard students preach. I've heard bishops preach. I've even heard world-famous preachers preach.
Most of those sermons have been more than good - they've been insightful, inspiring, and have fed me with God's word. LSTC values good preaching and invites that into its life and worship. Many sermons from the last year are found linked from LSTC Chapel Sermons webpage.
Earlier this month, I was invited to meet with LSTC's alumni board to talk about LSTC's "branding and messaging." It's always more important for me, when this kind of opportunity comes along, to listen than to talk. The alumni gathered there told me what they think of LSTC and what they say about LSTC to others. Here's the gist of what they told me:
LSTC does a good job training people in the basics of pastoral ministry: preaching, worship leadership and pastoral care. This enables graduates to go to any setting in the church - urban, rural, and everywhere in between - and serve well. And that serves the church and the world well.
What did you learn at LSTC? More importantly, what do you tell others about LSTC? Tell me at jboden@lstc.edu.
Blessings as you bear witness to the good news of Jesus Christ,

Being part of the church in Nebraska and Chicago
by Gretchen Ritola M.Div., Class of 1985
As we were developing our confirmation program at St. Luke and St. Paul's in Emerson, we decided it was important for those preparing for affirmation of their baptism to experience what it means to be part of the church. We wanted to them to know about all three expressions of the ELCA.
At the congregational level that includes regular involvement in worship and service to the congregations and community. The summer between 7th and 8th grade, confirmands take a one-day trip to Omaha and visit the offices of the Nebraska Synod and ministry sites in Omaha to learn about their ministry as part of the synod.
The summer between 8th and 9th grade they take a five-day trip to Chicago to learn about their ministry as part of the ELCA. We incorporate study of the Apostle's Creed into this time.
Classes range in size from four to 25, with an adult for every three-or four confirmands. The congregation's Endowment Foundation and the Women of the ELCA cover all the costs of the trip except for meals and personal expenses, which run about $125 per student. We fly into Chicago's Midway Airport on a Monday afternoon and take the bus to LSTC... [Read more.]
