Mission Statement

The Lutheran School of Theology at Chicago forms visionary leaders to bear witness to the good news of Jesus Christ.

LSTC entrance, SeptemberBlessed Hands

On the Sunday of Labor Day Weekend, I attended St. Paul Lutheran Church in Pontiac, Ill.  After her sermon, Pastor Mary Kay Henson, (2008, M.Div.), invited worshipers to the font to have their hands blessed and to bless the hands of the next person in line.

It reminded me of one of the most meaningful annual rituals at LSTC. During worship the first week of classes, the Pastor to the Community anoints and blesses the hands of new students.

I was in Pontiac for urgent surgery that my mother needed. Before she was taken into the operating room, my mother's pastor joined us at the hospital. We prayed that God would bless the hands of the doctors and nurses who would care for her.

How many similar prayers will the new LSTC students pray when they are pastors and leaders in the church and world? How many hands will they hold in times of joy and times of sorrow? How many hands will they bless to do the work of God in the world? How could we possibly begin to count?

May God bless the work of your hands -

October 27 is the last day of classes!!!!

Well, it would be, if not for our generous donors.   The annual tuition that a seminary student pays covers only 13% of the total cost of educating a seminary student.   This means that if LSTC depended only on tuition, at its current level, classes would have to end on October 27.

Because of LSTC's generous donors, including support from individuals, congregations, synods, and churchwide, students get two full semesters of classes, J Term and field education experiences. October 27, 2010 will be our annual "Donor Appreciation Day" at LSTC.   Students, faculty, and staff will be invited to sign postcards which will be mailed to our donors to thank them for providing such a large percentage of the cost of seminary education.   We could not form visionary leaders without our faithful donors.
