LSTC, April 2010

Greetings!

LSTC is in what I've been calling "April madness." It's the time of year when there aren't enough hours in the day or days in the week to pack in all the activities scheduled at the seminary. On April 8 there were four community-wide events going on simultaneously.
That evening may have been an extreme bout of "April madness," but more activities are being entered into the community calendar as I write.

It's frustrating not to be able to attend all of these helpful, fascinating, intriguing, edifying events.  But I see that this frenzy of activity is not unlike the tulips and trees, daffodils and dogwoods that have opened up all at once as spring arrives in Chicago.

The LSTC community needs to share the wealth of its creativity, wisdom, and knowledge.

And come April, we realize that we have only a  few weeks left to do this before we scatter for the summer or for the year or for all time.

We learn, we share, we play, we discern before the 2009-2010 LSTC community disbands, never to be re-formed in quite the same way. While this community is in full bloom I invite you to share in the abundance of who we are and what we have to offer to each other and to the church.

I fit all the stereotypes of the first born, hyper responsible, type "A" personality. There's no doubt about it, that's me in a nut shell. In fact, I wrote this article on Holy Wednesday as if I didn't have enough to attend to. I can hear my friends laughing right now as they read these words!

While I preach that we are saved by grace through faith because of Christ, I pastorally serve as if work's righteousness is the key to salvation. In my 15 years of ordained ministry, I've managed to preside over three capital campaigns, a new building, a renovation, a redevelopment of a parish, serve on synod staff and pastor two of my synod's larger parishes. In between this, I've managed to complete a doctor of ministry program and perform a wedding or two. My day off, you say? I've missed more than my fair share of them. It's been a busy 15 years.

Now don't misunderstand me, I'm not so sure these professional notches on my belt are anything to be proud of. While I remain thankful for every opportunity I've had to serve, I have treated ministry like a sprint instead of a marathon. I kept an unhealthy and unforgiving pace... [ Read more
