Monthly News for Alumni and Friends

LSTC, March 20210

Greetings!

Some of you know it, and others do not. Currents in Theology and Mission is a resource for your ministry that has been around for 30-some years. It's published by three ELCA seminaries - LSTC, Pacific Lutheran Theological Seminary, and Wartburg Theological Seminary. Until a year ago it was edited by Dr. Ralph Klein.

LSTC faculty members Kathleen D. "Kadi" Billman, Kurt K. Hendel, and Mark N. Swanson are editing the journal these days and continue to provide useful and challenging ideas from scholars and pastors.

The alumni story in this edition of the E.pistle appears in the February 2010 issue of Currents in Theology and Mission. David Housholder chronicles his ministry and influences as he tries to preach in his own voice, from his own life experiences. Last year he published two books - the Galatians group/class study in the Augsburg Fortress Book of Faith series and Light Your Church on Fire without Burning It Down, an introduction to Pentecostalism. He is pastor of Robinwood Church in Huntington Beach, Calif.

Stewardship and tithing was the theme for the October 2009 issue of Currents. It contains one of the best new collections of articles on those topics. If you are longing to be inspired in order to inspire others on the topics of stewardship, money, and tithing, get your hands on a copy of this issue.

That's easy to do. Copies are available courtesy of the Tithing and Stewardship Foundation at LSTC for the price of shipping and handling, just $2.50. To order a copy, contact Ruth Ann Deppe at rdeppe@lstc.edu  or 773-256-0712.

Subscribing to Currents is easy, too. Just go to http://www.lstc.edu/resources/publications/currents/index.html

Preaching your life message

by David Housholder,
M.Div. class of 1988

It's been 20 years since I graduated from seminary, and I'd like to walk you through a transformative experience from just a few months ago.

A group of pastor colleagues from Southern California gathered at my house in the middle of an afternoon.  I had used TiVo to record about twenty public speakers; most of them preachers, but some of them PBS motivational teachers.

We were hoping to study their communication techniques and learn a thing or two.

We anticipated that we would watch for a few hours, eat pizza, chitchat and go home.

Twelve hours later, well past midnight, we were in a whole different frame of mind.  Some of us doubted our calling.  We had been through a handful of heated exchanges.. [ Read more
