Education and so much more
Cheryl Hoth Assistant to the Dean and Vice President for Academic Affairs
I'm a Lutheran educator - I've been one all my adult life. Quite simply put, it's just what I do. I have been an elementary school teacher, a choir director, a volleyball coach, a high school guidance counselor and a registrar - all at institutions of Lutheran education. So becoming a part of the community at LSTC last summer seemed a natural "fit" for me. I would now be working at a place that is at the highest level of Lutheran education - what a gift!
But I've discovered that LSTC is far more than an educational institution. Yes, it's the ELCA's place in Chicago for students who aspire to ordination or who are on another path that involves theological education. Yes, classes take place, papers are written, exams are inevitable and grades are given. Education happens here.....but so much MORE happens here!
I'm not technically an educator at LSTC - I'm an administrative assistant. But I've found that I've done some educating. Additionally, I've certainly done A LOT of learning -- so I have some understanding of the stresses and joys that accompany the students' experiences here. [ Read more ]

Creative Teaching Ministries Grant LSTC's newest scholarship was started by one of its newest graduates.
A recent LSTC graduate couple designed the Creative Teaching Ministry Grant to provide LSTC with "a tithe of our ministries that combines our vocations."
"We're not wealthy," the donors said, "but we understand that student aid is critical to LSTC's ongoing ministry, and God's ongoing mission. We want to take the abundance of blessing that we received as students and 'pay it forward' to future generations of LSTC students." They have committed to funding the CTMG with $1,000 a year.
The donors' hope is that the Creative Teaching Ministry Grant will inspire LSTC students to create arts-inspired Christian education curricula that will be useful to them in future ministry settings. They also hope to inspire other recent (or not-so-recent) graduates to join them in supporting LSTC's students.
This year, the CTMG was open to incoming students, and three applications were received. The applicants each designed a four-week Christian education curriculum that drew on the creative arts in addressing a contemporary faith issue. The 2009-10 winner will be announced soon. For the 2010-11 school year, the scholarship competition will be open to incoming and returning students in any degree program. Prospective applicants are encouraged to contact Dorothy Dominiak ( ddominia@lstc.edu) for more information. |

Reunions
Watching Hope Grow: Reflections on the Seminex Reunion
The story of Christ Seminary-Seminex primarily is a story of hope.
For three glorious days, the Augustana Chapel at LSTC was filled with Seminex hope. Nearly 200 of the pioneers who learned and taught theology "in exile" came together at LSTC for a powerful 35th anniversary celebration on June 23-25.
"I had a unique vantage point: An outsider, I got to help plan the event, and then watch the story unfold," recalls Jessica Nipp.
The Seminex story is a complex one. "Our common experience which brought us here today has infinite variety in our memories," asserted Ed Krentz in his plenary address, "Bible, Book of Faith." "[It] takes us to different physical locations, recalls different faces and conversations, and inevitably leads to different ways of thinking about 'the Missouri War'."
Classes of 1960 Reunion Groups to Meet in 2010
The Classes of 1960 will join at LSTC on May 15 and 16, 2010, during Commencement Weekend.
Mark your calendars and watch for more information to come.
