Monthly News for Alumni and Friends

LSTC, December 2008.

Greetings!

Bring many names, beautiful and good,
Celebrate in parable and story, holiness in glory, living, loving God.
Hail and hosanna! Bring many names!
-- "Bring Many Names" by Brian A. Wren © 1989 Hope Publishing Co.

During this season of Advent, we name Jesus with many names: Emmanuel, Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Prince of Peace.

As you sing and preach about this Jesus, with his many names, consider the ways you see God made flesh in those around you. Whom do you see and know with the potential to proclaim the good news of God's love in Jesus Christ? And what can you do about it?

"Bring" their names to me and to my colleagues in Vocation, Admissions, and Financial Aid, Joy McDonald Coltvet and Dorothy Dominiak. They will send an invitation to those you "name" to visit LSTC to see how they might develop and share their gifts for ministry in the church and to the world.

Perhaps the person who comes to mind is a high school sophomore or junior. "Bring" that name to me and Heather Wallace, coordinator of the Youth in Mission program, will invite him or her to LSTC's three-week summer program, Serving Christ in the World. It is a life-transforming experience for youth, when they explore how they can live out their faith in the world.

As you share your own gifts in this time of waiting and preparation, know that we give thanks to God for your witness, for your service, and for your partnership in LSTC's ministry of preparation.

Blessings,

Memories - memories

by Roger A. Nelson
B.D. Class of 1969

Roger and Marion Nelson.I graduated from Calumet High School on Chicago's south side in 1943 and marched right into the Army Air Corps. I received Second Lieutenant bars and navigator wings the next year. I flew combat in B-24s out of Italy and was shot up and bailed out on the last mission of World War II.

When I returned home, Marion and I (she graduated from high school with me) were married - 63 years ago this month....

I went to work as a draftsman, engineer of buildings and bridges, and started my own construction company working throughout the country establishing our nation's new traffic control system. I attended the University of Chicago for four years and got a certificate in liberal arts.

Because of good times in business, we moved our two daughters to Lincolnshire, Ill. A good mission developer, the Rev. Karl Langrock, established the Lutheran Church of the Holy Spirit and I was asked to be the chairman of the building committee to plan and build the new church building. After completing the project, I told Marion that I thought the Holy Spirit bug had bitten me and I should go to seminary.

I started at Maywood in 1966 and when LSTC came into being, I attended there and graduated in 1969. Those were tough years in our country. Martin Luthern King Jr. and Robert Kennedy were assassinated. There were riots at the Democratic National Convention in Chicago and the country was divided over the Viet Nam War.

Considering my past experiences, I thought God was calling me to be a chaplain in the military...

Youth in Mission Pastoral Care for Youth
2009 Conference

Youth ministry workers and clergy will not want to miss LSTC's first annual Youth in Mission Conference: Pastoral Care for Youth. This conference was the dream of youth ministers from across the country who expressed the need for more conversation and education around caring for youth.

The keynote speaker will be Professor Robert Dykstra of Princeton Theological Seminary who will share his expertise in caring for adolescent boys.  Kenda Creasy Dean, fellow youth ministry expert, says of Dykstra, "In addition to being one of the most popular and provocative teachers on campus (Prof. Dykstra's "Pastoral Care for Adolescents" course at the Princeton Seminary is legendary - and packed...every time he teaches it) ..."

--Care for a Child of a Substance Abuser - Rev. Dr. Bob Albers
