Monthly News for Alumni and Friends

LSTC, September 2008.

Greetings!

"The strife is o'er, the battle done; Now is the victor's triumph won! Now be the song of praise begun. Alleluia!"
Connie Kleingartner, in class.
On August 24, Augustana Lutheran Church in Hyde Park reverberated with those words, the recessional hymn for Connie Kleingartner's memorial service. Connie had chosen it.

The Rev. Dr. Connie Kleingartner, LSTC director of field education, coordinator of candidacy, and Logos Associate Professor of Evangelism and Church Ministries, died on August 21, from complications of inflammatory breast cancer.

During the 18 months of radiation, chemotherapy and surgeries, Connie did everything she could to stop the disease but was also realistic about her condition.  Inflammatory breast cancer is an aggressive and often fatal form of cancer. In the late fall before surgery, and again, in May, when she learned the cancer had metastasized, she allowed the LSTC community to care for her in a service of anointing and healing and then in service of commendation of the dying.

Dr. Kleingartner's ministry at LSTC will continue to touch thousands of lives in the church through the students she taught and mentored and their ministries, and in the ways her work shaped the candidacy process of the ELCA.

Whenever students went through times of uncertainty in their journeys through seminary, Connie encouraged them to "trust the process." The LSTC community now trusts the process of saying goodbye to Connie Kleingartner, our sister in Christ, giving thanks for what she taught us about a life of service and leadership and about letting herself rest in God's grace and mercy at the end of life.

Blessings,

LSTC Opportunties

by Darcy A. Tillman
M.Div. Class of 1999

Darcy A. Tillman. When I was discerning where to go to seminary, there was not a doubt that LSTC was where I was supposed to be.  LSTC had a strong faculty, was in a great location, and was part of a consortium of seminaries that would broaden my theological education and provide opportunities to understand ministry in a global context.

While in seminary, I was also blessed with the opportunity to work in the Office of Admissions and to plan the seminary sampler weekends.  I would always encourage prospective students to attend a seminary where they would be both challenged and nurtured in their ministry formation.

Indeed, LSTC was such a place for me.  The opening class, "Unity in Diversity", set the tone for the studies.  This class invited us to learn to be a community even with the diversity of our beliefs, experiences, and calls to ministry.  I was nurtured in seminary through the chapel services, the mentoring from faculty and staff, and through spiritual direction.

In addition to my on campus experience, a highlight was my internship in the Central African Republic (C.A.R.).  Prior to going to seminary, I had always wanted to live and work in French speaking Africa.  I still value the support I received from the seminary as I prepared for this internship, as I lived in C.A.R., and when I returned.

 Campaign Progress Update

Equipping the Saints for Ministry ended the 2007 - 2008 fiscal year with a record amount of gifts received:  $7,529,777.

Unrestricted gifts to the Annual Fund continue to grow - 9% this fiscal year.  These vital dollars are used by LSTC in a multitude of ways, from the most basic (heating and electricity) to the essential (recruiting top-notch faculty), and everything in between. When you give unrestricted gifts to the Annual Fund, you allow LSTC the flexibility to respond to urgent needs as well as important opportunities.

Campaign Progress as of June 30, 2008.

As we grow the Annual Fund, cash gifts into the LSTC Fund grew nearly 90% last year.  The LSTC Fund provides endowed scholarships and fellowships, faculty chairs, and funds for upcoming building modernization to create a better environment for teaching and learning using energy-efficient equipment.

Overall campaign progress continues to grow, and we look forward to sharing news and updates throughout the year.
For your gifts, prayers, and support through this past year let me say thank you.  Please continue to keep the LSTC community in your prayers as we enter a new academic year.
