Has the Christian church historically been confused about the fact that human life begins at fertilization? Nancy Pelosi says yes, but she would be wrong.
ASK AUGUSTINE!
by Paul A. Tambrino, Ed.D., Ph.D. |
Was Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives, Nancy Pelosi correct (regarding the issue of when life begins) when she recently said "over the centuries, the Doctors (those theologians who established the doctrines) of the church have not been able to make that definition. St. Augustine said at three months;" and then she went on to say that "it's only been about 50 years that the church has understood life to begin at conception?"
Pelosi's few words could not have contained more falsehoods... In saying that my namesake, St. Augustine, said "three months" she made an historical error involving the greatest theologian of Christianity's first 1,000 years.
...Christian tradition from the earliest days has always held a firm anti-abortion attitude. Such has been the church's unwavering 2,000 year old doctrine regarding the sanctity of life. Read more. |

Once again presbyteries will vote on Amendment B
In the next few months each of the 173 presbyteries in the PC(USA) will be voting on whether to substitute new language for the section of the Book of Order G-6.0106b. At question is whether or not the PC(USA) will hold to it's constitutional standard that only those who practice fidelity in marriage between one man and one woman and chastity in singleness are to be ordained as deacons, elders, and pastors.
Presbyterians Pro-Life is convinced that a return to the Biblical teaching concerning the sacred value of the family is essential to recovering respect for the sacred value of individual human lives. God has ordained the family, the basic social unit of all human institutions, to propagate, protect, and nurture human life (See Statement of Purpose).
PPL is working with other renewal groups to network and distribute resources to assist you in preparing for this important vote. You can download background information, analysis, and a resource packet from the Presbyterian Coalition website by clicking here.
PPL's Associate Director, Laureen Bodnar, who was a commissioner at the 2008 General Assembly has prepared the following related resources.

Stand 4 Life Series:
The Beauty of the Potter By Laureen Bodnar Standing for life issues is not isolated to opposing abortion. To respect human life is to respect all human life regardless of age, race, religion, development level, environment, or ability to function in society. Too often, we consider those with mental or physical disabilities or deformities as non-essential to the life of the church. Read More
