Inspiring ministries in Western PA Uphold the value of Life!
"Love in a Basket" PPL's display table at the New Wilmington Mission Conference on July 20 provided an opportunity for me to chat with some great folks from across the nation. One couple that stopped by shared information about a mission outreach project of the Presbyterian Women's group at Laboratory Presbyterian Church, in Washington, PA.
The ministry is called "Love in a Basket." For several years now, the group has collected donated baby items, clothes, and personal items for unwed moms or other new moms in need. In their first year of this ministry they prepared three baskets. So far this year, they've already distributed ninety! They receive referrals from local churches, community residents, and organizations working with new mothers. Then they prepare a basket of special gifts for both baby and mom. The basket distributions are kept confidential so that only those who provide the referrals know the identity of the recipients.
Each basket contains a selection of hand-made and new items for the baby and a special treat for the mother like scented lotion, body wash or other personal care items as well as an inspirational card to assure her that she's being prayed for and loved. If you would like to know more about this ministry or perhaps make a donation, call Bettie Stammerjohn at 724-222-4217.
YoungLives Pittsburgh East Hills
Another Pittsburgh ministry that is making a difference in the lives of pregnant teens is YoungLives. This is a faith-based ministry focusing on mentoring and loving a teen mom right where she is in her life as she faces the challenges of parenting. The activities, camps, and projects provided are designed to allow teen girls the opportunity to do normal teen girl things. Currently they have 10 girls paired with mentors and are building trusting relationships with 15 others.
The ministry has been so successful that they are expanding their outreach with a second facility based at Christ Church at Grove Farms in the North Hills of Pittsburgh. They are also preparing to train male mentors so that they can offer the same caring ministry to young dads. Ultimately the goal is to build relationships of love and trust so that young people are led to an everlasting relationship with Jesus Christ. Visit their website here.
