A CIS Success Story!

Overcoming Obstacles: CIS Success Stories October 2011
Peer Court & Dropout Prevention Program

Eighth grader Paige Lowery has come a long way since the 6th grade, when she missed almost 40 days of school, was written up for "having a mouth," was suspended for hitting a teacher with a ball of paper and stole a pair of jeans that almost sent her to jail. CIS Success Coach Brian Walker has helped Paige through CIS of Brunswick County's Peer Court Program, an alternative juvenile justice program where young people who commit crimes at school are tried by a group of their peers and sentenced to community service instead of going to real court, perhaps landing themselves in jail and certainly having a record until they are 18. Watch the "Overcoming Obstacles" video above and check out the wonderful story of how, with the help of CIS and the staff of Cedar Grove Middle School, the course of Paige Lowery's life has been redirected. "We all make mistakes," says Brian Walker, "but what you do when you make a mistake is what's important."

Progress Energy Recognizes the Power of One

The "Power of One" award is sponsored by Progress Energy and is presented to a business, community of faith, agency, organization or individual which has displayed dedication and commitment to the children and families of Brunswick County. This year's award was presented to St. James The Fisherman Episcopal Church After School Tutoring Group as an Adopt A School Partner for Union Elementary School. Realizing that it "takes a village to raise a child," members of St. James The Fisherman Episcopal Church decided several years ago they wanted to be a part of the 'village'. They discovered there was a need at Union Elementary and they took the necessary steps to fill this need. During the school year a group of up to 19 tutors works primarily one-on-one with 23 students who need a little extra help. They are a great asset to Union Elementary and the children they serve.
