Dear Friends,
Our 2010-2011 Annual Report has recently been released. It contains heart-warming stories of those whose lives we touch through our continued efforts to keep students in school. For example, an autistic boy thrived in the Summer Camp while a young girl was transformed through Action for Success. Partnerships established at the Family Resource Center help clothes those less fortunate than ourselves. And, not one, but two Teen Court participants have just finished law school! This is why we strive to keep our programs operational in these uncertain economic times. Your support and encouragement do make a difference!
In Appreciation,
Cynthia

Annual Report Released
The 2010-2011 Communities In Schools of Brunswick County Inc. Annual Report was presented at a recent meeting of our Board of Directors. By offering a variety of programs and services, we have been providing resources to families throughout the county for sixteen years. The report includes some impressive numbers. For example, the Dropout Prevention Program students received services totaling over 580 hours of tutoring from certified tutors, over 245 hours of counseling from licensed counselors, and over 25 hours of life skills/conflict resolution classes. But the Success Stories are where you'll find the true value of what we do:
Program Participant Success Stories for 2010 - 2011
Adopt A School and Volunteer Program: Mr. Jim and Carlos read together all year. Carlos never showed much enthusiasm for reading or for anything else. He never said much, just did as he was told. Mr. Jim often had to coax Carlos to talk or do more than nod his head yes or no. At the end of the year, however, he excitedly said, "Mr. Jim, Mr. Jim, because you worked with me all year I am going to the next grade! Will you come to 3rd grade with me Mr. Jim?" Mr. Jim said it was the first time he'd seen glee and delight in Carlos' eyes.

A Busy Time for Parents!
Parenting Education classes are going strong throughout Brunswick County! On September 29th parents in the Leland area completed a 12 week series of The Incredible Years parenting classes. Another group of parents started the 12 week series the following week in Southport. Parents in the Shallotte area are scheduled to begin October 11th. Many parents have already taken advantage of Parenting Wisely parenting classes offered during the day in all three locations. These classes are provided either on a 1:1 basis or in a small group. There are two parent support groups which continue to meet twice a month: Single Parent Support Group in Supply and Grandparents Raising Grandchildren in Leland. Now that school is in session, workshops and informational sessions are being held in the schools. Workshops for parents of kindergarten students are scheduled to begin at Bolivia Elementary, Southport Elementary, and Jessie Mae Monroe Elementary during the month of October.

The winning ticket was sold by Ms. Tammy Triplett-Kesky of The Red Apple Group, LLC, who volunteered to help sell raffle tickets. And, because we were able to sell all 2,000 tickets, CIS was a big winner as well with $10,000 being raised to help our programs.
