CIS Connections

CIS E-News Issue: 13March 2011

newsletter hearder march 2011

Dear Friends,

Although it's been a very cold winter, here at CIS we have definitely not been hibernating; in fact, we've been thriving. Our volunteers have been busy mentoring and tutoring the students of Brunswick County, painting the faces of our Little Princesses, and preparing for Big Toy Day and the Gala. Our staff is working to expand the reach of our Summer Camp, Parenting Programs, and Scholarships. Community partners have put on their thinking caps and come up with creative ways to help fund our activities. Additionally, the CIS National Office has just completed a 5-year study of our practices; proving what we knew all along - the CIS model works!

Join us in celebrating the accomplishments we have made in providing quality programs and services to children and families. Each and every one of you can proudly say you are part of the CIS family and have made a difference in your community. We thank you for your continued support and dedication.

 In Appreciation,

Cynthia

Cynthia Tart, Executive Director

Most Effective Dropout Prevention Organization in America

On February 25, the national office of Communities In Schools released the results of a five year comprehensive longitudinal evaluation. It concluded that the CIS model resulted in the strongest reduction in dropout rates of any existing fully scaled dropout prevention program that has been evaluated; that CIS is unique in having an effect on both reducing dropout rates and increasing graduation rates; and that the CIS model is effective across states, school settings, grade levels and student ethnicities. Importantly, analyses indicate that the more fully and carefully the model is implemented, the stronger the effects. In other words, the results shown support what Communities In Schools has been doing for the past 30 years - empowering students to stay in school and achieve in life. CISNC Award

Brunswick County Receives State Recognition

At the 2011 Communities In Schools of North Carolina Annual Training Institute, we were recognized as the local affiliate with the most volunteers: 1,934 volunteers, donating more than 67,000 hours of volunteer time, in the 2009-2010 school year. We are proud of the volunteers who serve in our programs and events. They reflect a community which values its young people and is willing to take the time to make a personal commitment to them. The award was accepted on behalf of the many civic groups, businesses, communities of faith, and individual volunteers who step forward to dedicate their talents and resources to address the needs of youth and families.

The theme of the Training Institute was "The Power of the Story" and was made possible, in part, by RBC Bank. Our Parent Education Director Debbie Gurreri received the second place storytelling award for "The Story of Parent Education: To Inspire, To Teach, To Transform" a hand-made booklet which captures the impact of the Parenting Education Program.

We are grateful to have so many talented people working together to serve the children and families of Brunswick County. (Pictured, Linda Harrell, President of CIS North Carolina and Cynthia Tart)

Volunteers Making a Difference!

Two volunteers, June and Margaret, started working with Tina in first grade using the Great Leaps program. Tina has had a difficult time with reading comprehension.  Her reading problems affected all her subjects. Tina is now in 5th grade and for the first time is on the AB honor roll.  She smiled from ear to ear when she found out!  She has asked both her tutors to go to Middle School with her. They both offered to stay with her until she graduates high school.

Looking for an Exciting Summer Camp?

summer camp

Partnering with Brunswick County Parks and Recreation, CIS is offering Brunswick County Summer Camp 2011. Building on the success of last year's program, this camp offers the excitement and anticipation of field trips to places such as Jungle Rapids, IMAX Theater and Alligator Adventure. Children will play tennis, recreational sports, participate in arts and crafts, an array of games and make many new friends. Available at Belville, Southport, Supply, and Union Elementary Schools, this will run weekly June 13 - August 19. For detailed information on all camp activities, contact Kathy Smith.

You have questions? We have answers.

The staff of the Parenting Education Program has been very busy "spreading the news" about positive parenting. During the months of February and March we have been conducting "Question and Answer " parent workshops at several of the Elementary Schools. A number of the schools are also including a "Parent Tip of the Month" column in their school newsletters. As soon as the twelve week classes ended in Leland, they began in Southport. In March, we have classes beginning in Shallotte. We also offer the classes in Spanish. For schedules and information contact Debbie Gurreri.

Scholarship Applications Due March 31

CIS has twenty scholarships to award in 2011. Applications must be submitted to the high school guidance department and are due March 31. These scholarships are made possible through the generous contributions of Dr. Anna Blizzard, Capeside Animal Hospital, Charles Erickson, Dinah and Ed Gore, Cindy Hauman, Rebecca and Mark Kaplan, the Labor Day Surf-Off, Iveta and Roger Mason, Joan and Walt Madsen, David Redwine, Polly and Rusty Russ, and others. If you would like to learn more about the program, please visit our website or contact Kimberly Bandera.

A Message from Brunswick County Schools

"The Governor's budget proposal calls for a 4% decrease in funding for public schools, and the leadership in the General Assembly proposes cuts more than double that percentage. The final outcome will surely be somewhere between those two figures. Brunswick County Schools has cut its budget each of the last two years, and it appears that reductions will be necessary for the next couple of years at least. It's a difficult time for public agencies and for non-profits like CIS. The services and support provided by CIS to Brunswick County Schools are especially valued during tough economic times. We call upon our fellow citizens to let our elected representatives know of their support for public schools and the non-profit organizations like CIS that support them. This is the worst possible time to divert scarce resources to additional charter schools or for tax rebates to families who can afford to send their children to private schools. Brunswick County Schools and CIS will continue to provide our children with the best education possible with the funding we are allocated, and we will attempt to minimize the impact on classroom learning above all else."  Dr. Edward H. Pruden, Superintendent
