PLEASE NOTE IMPORTANT CALENDAR CHANGE

It has come to our attention that an error was made in scheduling the PSAT exams for this year.  Instead of Wednesday, October 10, the PSAT exams must be administered on Wednesday, October 17.  In order to accommodate this change, we will move the B-day scheduled for October 17 on our calendar to October 10.  The X-day for Grade 9 Retreat and Grade 10 & 11 PSAT will move to October 17.  The rest of the days in the cycle will follow as they are on the calendar.

Seniors are encouraged to move college visits to October 17.  If seniors have a serious conflict with this schedule change, please see Mrs. Cerasuolo or Mrs. Kupcinskas.

Making Strides against Breast Cancer

All members of the Fontbonne community are invited to join us on Sunday, October 14 at 8:30 a.m. for a 5-mile awareness and fund raising walk that will begin and end at Fontbonne Academy. Proceeds from our walk will go directly to the American Cancer Society to help people with breast cancer through outreach, advocacy and research. You may register for the walk or donate to our team online at: http://main.acsevents.org/goto/fontbonne.   In addition, students who register or make a donation are invited to contribute to our Wall of Hope in the cafeteria--adding the names of those we honor who are living with breast cancer or who have survived the disease, remembering those we've lost, and noting those who have changed lives through their work to end breast cancer.   Please stop by the cafeteria to view or add to our wall!

Breast Cancer Awareness Dress Down Day

On Friday, October 12, all students are invited to commemorate National Breast Cancer Awareness month by wearing pink tops together with their regular uniform bottoms, socks and shoes. We will be accepting voluntary donations in the cafeteria during lunch for the Ellie Fund, a local non-profit organization that provides support services, such as transportation, childcare and meals to breast cancer patients and family members in Massachusetts.

Service Opportunity

Ms. Denning emailed students last week with information on an on-going service opportunity at Casserly House in Roslindale. Casserly House is a ministry of the Sisters of Saint Joseph of Boston that provides a center for learning, assistance and caring. Their After School Program is a homework help program for students in the Roslindale neighborhood. Fontbonne volunteers would work as tutors with students in the After School Program from 3 -5 p.m. They have a particular need for volunteers on Wednesdays. Students should refer to the email from Ms. Denning or stop by the Office of Mission and Ministry to get more information. Volunteers will sign up directly with Casserly House and will be responsible for their own transportation to and from Roslindale.

Kaplan PSAT Test

Kaplan is offering a free practice PSAT test to all of our sophomores and juniors on Tuesday, October 9, 2012 from 6 p.m. - 9 p.m. This is a great opportunity for your daughters to take a timed practice PSAT exam before they take the test on the 17th. Good News

The first Open House was held on Sunday, September 30. Despite the dreary weather, the spirit of Fontbonne was bright and welcoming to a large crowd of enthusiastic visitors. Congratulations to Mrs. Miner, assisted by Mrs. Greenwood, and to the team of Student Ambassadors and their leaders, seniors Julia Butts and Hannah Page, juniors Shannon McIsaac and Collette O'Connor, and sophomore liaison Clara Hanifin. Thank you to all the students and adults who helped to make the event successful.

The Guidance Department, under the direction of Mrs. Spignesi, planned and hosted our second College Mini Fair on Tuesday, October 2. This gave all our seniors and any unscheduled juniors an opportunity to meet college representatives in person in the comfort of their own school.

Wednesday, October 3, right after school, grade 9 students and students who have newly transferred to Fontbonne were invited to attend the Activities Fair. Every club and sport was represented at the fair so that new students could see the variety of opportunities for them to get involved in the school community. A special thank you to the student coordinators, seniors Christine Carroll, Erin Ferrera, Hannah Page, Natalie Pham, and Rebecca Simmons.

Following the Activities Fair, the Student Council hosted the Big Sister / Little Sister get together. All grade 9 students met their grade 12 Big Sisters. The afternoon included many activities for the students to get to know each other and concluded with a pizza party in the cafeteria. Thank you to Ms. Leonard, the officers and members of the Student Council, and all adults who helped with the event.

On October 3, senior Julia Butts attended the Harvard Club of Boston's Twenty-First Annual Prize Book Award Breakfast, held at the Harvard Club in Boston.  Julia was presented the Harvard Prize Book at Fontbonne Academy's Award Ceremony last spring.  As defined by the Harvard Alumni Association, the Prize Book is awarded to an outstanding student in the junior class who "combines excellence in scholarship and high character, combined with achievement in other fields."  The Harvard Prize Book is offered annually to 1,900 schools around the world. This year's featured speaker was Ms. Sally C. Donahue, Director of Financial Aid for Harvard College, and Undergraduate Admissions representative. Julia, who is also competing for Finalist standing in the National Merit Scholarship Program, was accompanied by her School Counselor, Ms. Lamb.
