From the Administration
PLEASE NOTE IMPORTANT CALENDAR CHANGE
It has come to our attention that an error was made in scheduling the PSAT exams for this year. Instead of Wednesday, October 10, the PSAT exams must be administered on Wednesday, October 17. In order to accommodate this change, we will move the B-day scheduled for October 17 on our calendar to October 10. The X-day for Grade 9 Retreat and Grade 10 & 11 PSAT will move to October 17. The rest of the days in the cycle will follow as they are on the calendar.
Seniors are encouraged to move college visits to October 17. If seniors have a serious conflict with this schedule change, please see Mrs. Cerasuolo or Mrs. Kupcinskas.

Walk for Breast Cancer!
Here are easy ways to support Fontbonne's challenge to raise $4,000 in the Walk for Breast Cancer on Sunday, October 14.
- Sponsor a student who is walking! The quickest and easiest way to donate to the Breast Cancer Walk is to sponsor one of our students.
- Donate online to our entire team. Go to http://main.acsevents.org/goto/Fontbonne. There is an option on that page to "Donate Now" and you will be able to donate to the entire team via credit card or PayPal.
- Write a check (or put cash in an envelope w/ Breast Cancer Walk marked on it). Please make sure your check is made out to "The American Cancer Society" (and NOT to Fontbonne).
- And of course you and your families and friends are more than welcome to join us for our walk on October 14
Please contact Ms. Denning at kdenning@fontbonneacademy.org with any questions.
Founding of the Sisters of Saint Joseph of Boston
Remembered This Week
On October 2, 1873, four Sisters of Saint Joseph from Brooklyn NY, under the leadership of Mother Mary Regis Casserly, arrived at St. Thomas parish in Jamaica Plain. Four days later they opened a school for girls in the church basement and 200 students were enrolled on the first day! We "stand on the shoulders" of these women of courage and we are grateful for the 139 years of ministry of the Sisters of Saint Joseph in the Boston area. We are proud to carry on their mission and charism in our school community as we continue to educate young women of "excellence tempered with gentleness."
Service Opportunities
Ms. Denning emailed students last week with information on several local service opportunities:
- An ongoing opportunity to tutor 5th through 8th grade students is available with a well-established program known as Project DEEP in Dorchester (subway accessible).
- Forbes House Museum in Milton is looking for volunteers to help as greeters and gallery assistants for a number of their upcoming events.
- MIT is looking for volunteers to help assemble science project kits for their K-12 outreach program on Saturday, October 13.
Students should refer to the email from Ms. Denning or stop by the Office of Mission and Ministry to get contact information for these organizations. Volunteers will sign up directly with the organization for these individual non-school-sponsored service projects. Service hours will be credited for students who participate and return their Service Verification forms.

Good News
Fontbonne hosted its annual Back to School Night on Thursday evening, September 27. Parents visited their daughters' classes, met the teachers and received an overview of this year's curriculum. During their "free" periods, the parents were encouraged to visit the Library, the Academic Success Center, the Mission and Ministry Office, the Guidance office and to enjoy a snack in the caf. There was a remarkable turnout. Thank you to the student ambassadors who helped to make the evening a success.
Reminder: The Activities Fair will be held on Thursday, October 4 after school in the foyer. Freshwomen and transfer students are invited to the Fair. Students representing Fontbonne's sports and clubs will be available with information about the activities offered at Fontbonne. After the Fair, the Class of 2016 will meet their senior "big" sisters. The day concludes with a light pizza supper. Check your calendar for the specific times.
Seniors Maretta Morovitz, Caroline Cabral, and Jessica Baker have been named Commended Students in the National Merit Scholarship Program. Of the top 50,000 of more than 1.5 million students who took the PSAT (Preliminary Scholastic Aptitude Test) in October 2011 and entered the National Merit Scholarship Program, 34,000 are recognized as Commended Students (the other 16,000 are named semi-finalists). It is an honor for any school to have a Commended Student. It is extraordinary that Fontbonne Academy, with a senior class of 73, has three Commended Students and one Semi-Finalist (Julia Butts, mentioned in last week's Good News). Congratulations to all of the Fontbonne faculty who prepared these students to compete with some of the most academically talented PSAT test takers, not only in the United States, but in the world.
The Spirit Committee hosted a welcome breakfast for the transfer students including the new International students on Friday, September 28. The Spirit Committee leaders paired the transfer students with a member of the Spirit Committee to help with transitioning to Fontbonne and a light breakfast was provided. Thank you to Spirit Committee leaders, seniors Julia Himmel and Maretta Morovitz, juniors Madison Devine and Collette O'Connor, and to all the members of Spirit Committee.
