From the School Nurse
Breast Cancer Walk is October 14
Please join us on Sunday, October 14, for the annual Breast Cancer Walk!
The five mile walk takes place in Milton. We leave Fontbonne at 9 a.m. and return around 11 a.m.
If anyone is interested please contact Nurse Katchpole at skatchpole@fontbonneacademy.org, or Ms. Denning at Kdenning@fontbonneacademy.org.
Breast cancer is currently the number one cause of cancer deaths in women around the globe. Worldwide breast cancer incidence and mortality are expected to increase by 50% in the next five years. While theses rates will be highest in developing nations, breast cancer is exploding in low- and middle-resource countries worldwide.
The Breast Cancer walk is an opportunity for members of the Fontbonne community to raise money for treatment and research, and more importantly, increase awareness of this global health crisis.
Physicals and Flu Shots
Please remember that copies of recent physicals should be given to the Nurse so that she can update health records and immunization status information that may go to colleges or employers.
If your daughter has had a recent physical or immunization, please send a copy of that report with her to school and ask her to bring it to the Nursing Office.
If your daughter will need to take a medication during school hours please call the Nurse for required information.
We will be offering flu shots as soon as the vaccine becomes available from the Milton Board of Health.

Good News
Fontbonne welcomed the Class of 2016 on Monday, August 27 to Freshwomen Community Day. The class had the opportunity to participate in a scavenger hunt and outdoor games; student leaders spoke to them about Fontbonne life; the peer educators planned an interactive prayer service and they enjoyed a barbecue lunch with their new classmates. Thank you to Mrs. McPhillips, Mrs. Spignesi and Sister Maryann for planning the day and a special thank you to all of the student leaders who made sure that the new class felt welcomed.
On Thursday morning, September 6, the Fontbonne Academy community officially opened the school year, 2012-2013, with liturgy. Celebrant, Gerry McKeon, S.J., the Campus Minister from the Arrupe Division at Boston College High, welcomed the adults and students. Thank you to Mrs. Carol Fortier, Director of Select Chorus, accompanist, Mr. Doug Anderson, the student chorus, Mrs. Denning, Director of Mission and Ministry, student Eucharistic ministers, readers and gift bearers for planning such a meaningful celebration.
Auditions were held this week for our fall play, "Yes, Virginia, there is a Santa Claus." The cast, with students from every grade level, was chosen by our director Mr. Anthony Emma, and rehearsals have begun. Please mark your calendars for the weekend of November 16, and join us for the Fontbonne rendition of this well loved classic.
A group of seniors (Julia Butts, Callie Cabral, Emily Devane, K.J. Moran and Maretta Morovitz) wanted to recognize local first responders in remembrance of 9/11. These seniors led an effort to purchase pizza lunches for the three Milton Fire Stations and the Milton Police Department in gratitude to these men and women who risk their lives every day to protect not only the Fontbonne Academy community but all of Milton. Donations were collected during the lunch periods and the pizzas were ordered and sent. As one senior said, "We hoped that through this simple gesture, we have expressed our endless thanks to these local heroes." This example of remembering "the dear neighbor" is living testament to the students' embracing of the mission of Fontbonne. Thank you to this group of seniors and to all of the students and adults for their generous donations.
Senior Julia Butts has been named a Semifinalist in the National Merit Scholarship Program and will have the opportunity to continue in the National Merit Scholarship competition. More than 1.5 million juniors took the PSAT( Preliminary Scholastic Aptitude Test) in October 2011 and entered the National Merit Scholarship Program. Based on their performance on that test, less than 1% (about 16,000) are named semifinalists. It is an honor for any school to have a Semifinalist given the small number that are chosen from a very competitive field. Congratulations to all Julia's Fontbonne teachers who prepared her to demonstrate her academic gifts.
