Dear Parents and Families,
Welcome to June, our final month of this school year, where the finish line lies within sight. As we bound toward it, I would like to take a moment to thank you for working with us in educating your daughter. We have witnessed so much growth. I hope you have seen that, too. Our graduation speaker, Kathleen Waldron Gershman '61, reflected on her mother's words: "Hard work never killed anyone." She added, "Fontbonne will indeed put you to the test, but you will be better for it." Most of your daughters have worked hard and been tested over and over again over the course of school year 2010-2011. It will pay off as we saw last week at graduation when we celebrated the accomplishments of our talented Class of 2011.
As we transition into summer, I urge you and your daughter to stay connected to Fontbonne through email and by visiting our website to learn of any schedule or event changes relevant to your family. If we need to let your daughter know of any program changes, we will contact her through her Fontbonne email.
Thank you again for a great school year, and may this summer bring you rest, relaxation, and the gift of vacation time with those you love. See you in September!
Sincerely, Mary Ellen Barnes Head of School
P.S. Ms. Gershman also mentioned in her graduation speech that every female Nobel Prize winner came from an all-girls school! Another reason to validate your choice of Fontbonne for your daughter. |
Monthly Spotlight:
Mrs. Bonacci's Science Classes

Mrs. Bonacci in her Chemistry Honors class. Much of her class work is project based.
Mrs. Bonacci, an experienced teacher of science at Fontbonne, has over the years, refined her teaching style. Realizing that students learn best if they are actively engaged, her classes have evolved to be project based. In her Introductory Science class of ninth graders, for example, students choose a green chemistry project of their choice. Topics range from composting and recycling, to making detergents and lip balm. Each student presents to the class and turns in a paper at the project's completion. The same is true for the tenth graders in her Physical Science class, whose project will focus on either the physics or sports of the physics of sound. In Chemistry Honors, sophomores and juniors have read The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks, the story of a poor farmer in Virginia whose cells, taken without her knowledge in the 1950s, became the first "immortal" human cells grown in culture. They were used to cure polio and uncover secrets of cancer, viruses, and the atom bomb's effects; help lead to important advances like in vitro fertilization, cloning, and gene mapping; and have been bought and sold by the billions. The story is woven into the birth of bioethics, and the legal battles over whether we control the stuff we are made of. This class is going to film a presentation of the characters in the book and hold a debate, which will also be filmed and shown to the Learning Community at their leisure.
"I really believe in project-based learning," said Mrs. Bonacci, "It brings the topics alive to the students where they can really access them. It makes the learning practical and real." |
Julie Connelly Interns Are Announced

The Julie Connelly Social Justice Internships have been awarded to, from left to right, Erin Fanikos, Marisa Adams, Lauren Haley and Amanda Nagim-Williams.
Congratulations to the the recipients of the 2011 Julie Connelly Social Justice Internships: Marisa Adams, Erin Fanikos, Lauren Haley, and Amanda Nagim-Williams. The four rising seniors will spend six weeks over the summer in a paid internship at local non-profit organizations that reflect their interests, one dealing with homelessness and the other domestic violence.
This internship was established by Citizens Bank to honor the memory of Julie Connelly, a 1977 graduate of Fontbonne Academy, who passed away in 2009. Four rising seniors are awarded $1,250 stipends each for summer internships in community based agencies that benefit women and/or promote social justice. Julie served on the board of trustees of the Women's Institute for Housing and Economic Development, and this internship reflects Julie's lifelong commitment to improving the lives of those less fortunate. Citizens Bank will fund this internship through the WIHED for three years beginning in 2010.

Although the school year is drawing to a close, the Parents Guild has two important events coming up in June.
On Monday, June 27, the Parents Guild will be sponsoring "Courageous Parenting 101," a highly-acclaimed substance abuse education and prevention seminar for parents of teenagers. Developed by the Courage to Speak Foundation, the workshop will cover topics including drug trends and current party culture, establishing and enforcing healthy limits for teens, and effective parenting styles. The workshop will be held in the school cafeteria from 6-9 p.m., and the Parents Guild will provide refreshments. The workshop is free, but parents are encouraged to rsvp by emailing parentsguild@fontbonneacademy.org. Special thanks to Fontbonne nurse Sue Katchpole for bringing this workshop to the attention of the Parents Guild!
The Parents Guild will also be sponsoring a "Gently Used Uniform Sale" during the NHS Used Book Sale on June 28 and 29. Students can drop off uniforms through the end of school at Sr. Maryann's office. The uniforms will be sold for a nominal charge during the uniform sale. Winners of the Music In the Parks: Christina Ferrera '11, Kristyn Galligan '11 with the Jazz Choir award, Emma Byrd '11 with the Instrumental Ensemble award, and Betsy O'Brien '11 with the Select Chorus award.
On Saturday, April 30, Mrs. Fortier and Mr. Anderson took their Select Chorus, Jazz Choir, and Instrumental Ensemble to Holyoke to compete in the "Music In The Parks" festival. Music In The Parks provides music festivals for bands, orchestras, choirs and other student music groups. Their goal is to bring together students and adjudicators in a positive learning environment that will inspire the students to strive not only for excellence, but to make music a life-long activity.
Instrumental Ensemble received a rating of Good and also received some nice comments from the judges. Jazz Choir and Select Chorus received Superior ratings and came in First and Second Place, respectively.
Christina Ferrera received a special commendation medal for her solo part in "Don't Cry For Me, Argentina."

On Monday, May 9, 2011 a group of students from Fontbonne Academy joined the residents of Eventide Home in Quincy for an afternoon ice cream social to celebrate National Nursing Home Week. Fontbonne Academy graduate Beverly Marano '59 who works at Eventide, invited the students from her alma mater to visit with the residents. The students also met XXX '61. This "golden grad" is a retired principal in the California public school system. She attributes her commitment to education to her experience with her wonderful teachers at Fontbonne Academy. She visits Massachusetts often, and while on her trip for her 50th class reunion, she also visited her aunt, a resident at Eventide, who recently turned 102. The Service Club will be partnering with the Activities Department at Eventide beginning in October 2011 to organize monthly visits during the school year.
