Calling All Walkers and Runners!

Come Out to Support Neuroblastoma on April 10

Prayers for Charlotte

Mark your calendars for Sunday, April 10! It is the Prayers for Charlotte road race. This 5K and 10K in Braintree is a fundraiser for Neuroblastoma, a very rare childhood cancer.  The four-year old daughter of Patrice McAndrew Kelly '88 is suffering from this disease and needs our support and prayers.  Fontbonne will be forming a team of alumnae and students who will both walk and run the 5K course. Our track and cross country coaches are encouraging all our runners to participate.  We hope you'll turn out for this great opportunity to help an alumna to raise awareness of this tragic disease.  If you are interested in being on the Fontbonne team, please be in contact with Mrs. McPhillips. More information about the race can be found on the website www.prayersforcharlotte.org

February Programs

"Heart Lifting" in the Wellness Center

The Wellness Center celebrated the month of February, National Heart Month, with a variety of different programs to raise awareness of heart-healthy lifestyle choices.

Among the activities, students were encouraged to come and "Keep the Beat." This hour-long fitness class was offered on two afternoons and consisted of heart pumping cardiovascular interval training. They were also treated to strawberries dipped in dark chocolate on Valentine's Day, which came with a brief discussion of how dark chocolate, in moderation, is heart-healthy. Students also took part in a quiz entitled, "Pour Better or Pour Worse" to test their knowledge of sugary juices, smoothies and coffees.

Thank you to Mrs. McPhillips for the many heart-centered activities that enriched our students last month!

Dear Parents and Families,

Mary Ellen Barnes, Head of School

The beginning of March turns our thoughts to spring.  As I write this letter in mid-February, we are enjoying two almost 60 degree days--a delightful respite in a winter that has been relentless with its snow and cold.  It's refreshing to come out of our winter hibernation, if only for a few days, and think about spring with its emergence of new life. We are comforted in knowing that, like the crocus that will push its head through the hard ground and open itself to the sun, we too can open ourselves to the beauty within and outside of us.

Fontbonne's March calendar mirrors nature's openness.  During the week of March 7-11 we celebrate Foreign Languages Week, sponsored by the World Language Department.  Our language teachers continue to open us to the richness of the much wider global community outside Fontbonne through the study of world languages, the International Festival, and exchange programs that bring students from other countries to Fontbonne and our own students to France and Argentina. In mid-February we welcomed four French students from the St. Louis de Gonzague School in Paris.  These students were with us for two weeks, hosted by Fontbonne families.  They spent most of their time immersed in our classes during the school day and attending games and activities after school. (They had a great time dancing at the Snowball!)  We look forward to opening our doors in welcome to students from Buenos Aires in April, another rich cross-cultural exchange and opportunity to let the larger global community into Fontbonne.

We don't need to go beyond the walls of Fontbonne Academy to experience and know how valuable this exchange can be. Fontbonne is blessed to have students from China, Korea, Thailand, and Viet Nam enrolled and sharing their cultures daily with the rest of us.  What enrichment this brings to our curriculum and our goal to make each student a global citizen! Walk into any history class and hear the point of view of a Haitian student on a world event; learn the values of Lebanese culture in an English literature class; see the beautiful contributions of Chinese student dancers at the International Festival, among the many others.

Fontbonne Academy offers the global stage within its walls, providing opportunities for all of our young women to process the world on a different level, adding a tangible reality and richness to the their everyday lives.  I feel so blessed to be a part of such a vibrant school.

May you and all those you love remain open to beauty wherever that beauty presents itself this spring.

Sincerely,

Mary Ellen Barnes

World Languages' Vista Higher Learning System

Language Lab

Students in Mrs. Herbert's French 4 Honors class listen to a recording on the Vista Higher Learning Supersite to hone their use of the subjunctive.  From left to right:  Emma Byrne '13, Rita Callahan '11, Melissa Camilien '11,

This year, the World Language Department adopted a new series published by Vista Higher Learning for introductory French and Spanish levels and continuing through the third year of Spanish and the fourth year of French.  There are several advantages of the new series.  The text books and accompanying materials promote communication through listening to conversations of native speakers, cultural video series, videos that feature teenagers in other countries, and authentic short films.  Additionally, there are current articles on contemporary issues and short literary texts.  Together with the vocabulary and the grammar, all of this material is designed to engage students in lively conversation and thoughtful writing.

Another tremendous advantage of the Vista Higher Learning program is its Supersite which allows students to do much more at home.  Through the Supersite, students practice new vocabulary and its proper pronunciation, review video from class, go through grammar tutorials, and complete challenging vocabulary and grammar based activities with immediate feedback.  There are also internet links to expand cultural material and additional readings.

Sra. Florencia Bond, a native speaker from Argentina who has taught at Fontbonne for fourteen years, is excited about the new program. "I enjoy the diversity of the media for the students to use, especially the assignments in the Supersite and the ability to do it at home.  The series makes better use of the language lab and promotes all areas of language proficiency.  Students are speaking more, both in the class and in the language lab!"

and Christine Carroll '13.

Betsy O'Brien

A Finalist in John Carroll University's

Arrupe Scholars Program

Betsy O'Brien

Senior Betsy O'Brien '11 is a scholarship finalist in John Carroll University's Arrupe Scholars Program.  John Carroll, Cleveland's Jesuit University, offers this scholarship to admitted students with a demonstrated commitment to social justice. Betsy flew to John Carroll University for a final round of interviews mid-February and is very enthusiastic about the opportunity.  "It is a great school with a commitment to social justice," she said.

Betsy, who has had to conquer many issues related to growing up with Type I Diabetes, is an advocate for children with this disease.  As a camper for five years and now a counselor at the Clara Barton Camp in North Oxford, MA, an internationally renowned overnight camp for girls with Type I Diabetes, Betsy has been able to transfer her passion to help others into action.  As a senior at Fontbonne Academy, she will focus her senior social justice project on "Diabetes and 504 Plans" because she wants to be assured that there are equal opportunities for all students with this disease.

Betsy was invited to apply to the Arrupe Scholars Program by her Admissions Counselor at John Carroll. Quickly determining that her knowledge of social justice aligned with their program, Betsy soon sent in the required essays and learned of her good fortune two weeks later: she is a finalist for the scholarship, which would equate to $20,000 per year for four years of college.  "I think Fontbonne has really prepared me in the area of social justice; I definitely knew what I was writing about," said Betsy.  Should she receive the award, she would have the opportunity to take classes in social justice and to travel to third-world countries on mission trips.  "It would be a wonderful learning experience," said Betsy.

As part of her social justice project, and under the guidance of a mentor from the American Diabetes Association, Betsy will be hosting an event at the Milton Public Library on Saturday, March 19 from 1-3 p.m. for children with Type I Diabetes and their parents called "Life after Middle School."  As a Youth Leader for the American Diabetes Association, Betsy hopes to ease the transition for students entering high school.  "I wish something like this had been available to me.  I want people to know what to expect and to take measures to make their move to high school easier," she said.

Social justice is a cornerstone of the Fontbonne Academy curriculum.  All students are required to do a year-long senior research project, called their social justice project, on a chosen social injustice. "The requirements of the program are multi-faceted and utilize almost every element of the curriculum.  Most importantly, students must engage in advocacy," stated Mary Ellen Barnes, Fontbonne Academy's Head of School.

The program culminates with the Social Justice Fair which is scheduled for Thursday, April 7, at Fontbonne.  Save the date.  We hope you'll join us to see all the good work of our senior class that day.

French Exchange Program in February

Students from France Arrive at Fontbonne

French exchange students arrived on a bright sunny February day and donned Fontbonne uniforms for the first time.  Visiting exchange students, from left to right: Anne Barbet-Massin, Quitterie Ballu, Marie Aoustin, and Garance Morane. They were hosted by Fontbonne students, pictured on the right, from left to right: Alanna Sparagna, Katie Crosby, Mary Kate MacKenzie, and Meghan Collins.

Four students and their chaperone from St. Louis de Gonzague, a Jesuit high school in Paris, arrived on February 10 and were hosted by four Fontbonne students.  Garance Morane was hosted by Katie Crosby, Marie Aoustin hosted by Mary Kate MacKenzie, Quitterie Ballu by Meghan Collins, Anne Barbet-Massin by Alanna Sparagna.  All of these Fontbonne students traveled to France in June, 2010 and lived with the French families in Paris.  While in Boston for 2 weeks, the four French students attended classes and after school activities with their "correspondantes," visited sights of Boston, spoke English, and experienced family life.  The benefit of this exchange program is that the students are able to spend time with their peers and be immersed in American teenage life.  Even though the students hadn't seen each other in over six months, it was clear from the arrival at the airport that they were very excited for this reunion and the second part of the exchange.  Meghan Collins summed up the exchange experience, "I loved and appreciated my French family, and I can now say I believe the feelings are mutual.  I might even return with their invitation to live with Quitterie and her family whenever I am next in France!"

Lenten Giving Initiative:

Engineers Without Borders

The Jerry Can Challenge

Katelyn Lowre '11, Denia Silva '11 & Dahlia Griffin '11 take the "Jerry Can Challenge," carrying 30 pounds of water for a 1/4 mile.

On Saturday, January 29, twenty-six students from Fontbonne Academy were welcomed by the student chapter of Engineers Without Borders at Northeastern University (EWB-NEU).  They learned about water inequity, an issue we take for granted here in Massachusetts.  They spent the day learning about how the lack of accessible clean water sources can impact a community.  The young women experienced what it is like to carry a jerry can.  Our course was a quarter mile of paved walkways and the cans were only half full.  Imagine what it must be like for young girls of six or seven or eight years of age to carry a full jerry can (40 pounds) an average of two miles each way on unpaved trails.  This Lent, we will address this issue as a community.

Our annual Lenten Giving Initiative begins on Ash Wednesday, and we will support EWB-NEU to help them build a rain water distribution system in the Ugandan village where the money we raised last year purchased the water pumps for two wells.  Each grade level will need to raise $350 to reach our goal.  Together we will make a difference in the lives of our sisters and brothers who need access to safe, clean water sources.

If you would like to contribute, you may send a check before April 1, payable to "Northeastern University - EWB," to Fontbonne Academy, 930 Brook Road, Milton, MA 02186, Attn: Maria Sarte.

May our efforts and prayers this Lent bring the success we seek to benefit our dear neighbors in Uganda.

Peer Ministers Initiate

"Mix -It-Up-A-Day Lunch"

A Monthly Opportunity to Make New Friends

Mix It Up Day at Lunch

Senior Peer Ministers Taylor Shepherd, Mackenzie Irvin, Nischeena Charles,  Maria Lombardi, and Rita Callahan hold one of the signs they created for "Mix-It-Up-A-Day Lunch."

On the Monday of Catholic Schools Week, Fontbonne Academy's Senior Peer Ministers challenged their peers to step outside their comfort zone and meet new people.  Lunch is usually a time to socialize with friends, but that day students were asked to meet the people they may see in the halls, but might otherwise never speak with.  It's all in an effort to build on the mission of their alma mater to make Fontbonne Academy an inclusive community of young women who recognize the importance of respect, responsibility, reconciliation and reverence.  Young women from many towns with different ethnic and religious backgrounds and a variety of economic situations who also possess talents, skills and dreams that are as numerous as the stars in the sky, make up our community.  Students were "mixed up" and met new people--all of whom are the faces and stories of today's Fontbonne Academy.  At the end of lunch, the Peer Ministers encouraged each girl to say "Hello" to the people they met that day rather than just walk pass them in the hall.  It's a call to remind students that gracious hospitality begins here with us.  "Mix-It-Up-A-Day Lunch" will take place once a month for the rest of the academic year.

International Festival

Raises Money for Medicines For Humanity

Medicines for Humanity at the International Festival

Fontbonne Academy World Languages Department embraced the Medicines for Humanity cause for the International Festival.  From left to right:  Kirk Ryan of Medicines for Humanity, Mrs. Herbert, World Languages Chairperson, Tim Bilodeau, Executive Director of Medicines for Humanity, and Sra. Bond, Spanish Teacher.

The International Club, Spanish National Honor Society and the French Honor Society sponsored the International Festival on Sunday, January 30.  The festival is an annual celebration of international culture.  Students and faculty members participated in presentations of music, dance, poetry, and a fashion show.  Donations collected at the door were given to Medicines for Humanity, an organization that supports the earthquake victims in Haiti.  The Executive Director, Tim Bilodeau, thanked the Fontbonne community for their generous donation and spoke about the tremendous need for medicine in the ravaged areas of Haiti.  An international buffet, featuring food from many areas around the world, was held in the cafeteria.  Fontbonne friends and families enjoyed the wide array of cultural treats.  Thank you to Mrs. Florencia Bond, Mrs. Anke Herbert, the student performers and the members of the International Club and the language honor societies for their efforts.  It was a great way to spend a cold Sunday afternoon.
