From the Head of School
Dear Parents and Families,
As we enter the month of June, it is hard to believe that the school year is nearly over. To many of us, including myself, this year has been a whirlwind. This is our first year with new governance in place and in our right-sized space. I congratulate all of us: parents, students and the adult Learning Community for not just adjusting to the changes, but excelling through them. During this year of transitions we earned the highest possible ten-year extension from the New England Association of Schools and Colleges in our reaccreditation with anecdotal comments such as, "Fontbonne is a true gem." We couldn not have asked for better.
Other highlights of this school year include the dedication of our new library in honor of our founding principal, Sister Flavia; great successes in athletics, particularly basketball, hockey and now softball and golf; our largest and best-ever Evening of Stars; and a 22% increase in giving to our Annual Fund (this during a recession!). The list could go on and on and does not include the tale of the flood which truly brought out the best in our teachers and students who were able to continue teaching and learning through web-based technology.
I am very proud of the 2009-2010 school year and I thank you for your support through the many changes and challenges that Fontbonne has gracefully hurdled. Additionally, I look forward to the summer when we anticipate more transformation on the outside of the building and the grounds. While we are looking forward to the updates on the outside, on the inside we will begin the refurbishing of the Art Room in honor of Jennifer Chistolini Kelly '90 whose friends and family have generously donated in her memory. Again, all good change.
The French have a saying: "Plus ca change, plus c'est la meme chose," or "the more things change, the more things remain the same." While Fontbonne has experienced a year of great change, we still remain a strong faith-based school where the transformation we truly seek is in the spirit of each girl who walks the halls.
My best wishes for a healthy and restful summer to you and your families,
Sincerely,
Mary Ellen Barnes

Erin Munroe Speaks at Fontbonne
Author and Licensed Mental Health Counselor Ms. Erin Munroe gave a talk on May 12 on Managing Teen Anxiety.
Residents of Milton, Fontbonne Academy parents and concerned adults packed the Fontbonne foyer Thursday evening, May 12, for an informative talk given by mental health professional and author, Erin Munroe. Ms. Munroe is the author of The Everything Guide to Stepparenting: Practical, reassuring advice for creating healthy, long-lasting relationships and the upcoming books When Big Issues Happen to Little Girls and Anxiety Workbook for Girls, available in July. After a brief relaxation exercise, Ms. Munroe gave parents multiple tips on how to help their teens with anxiety and to help them cope with the social environment they are experiencing. Topics ranged from sleep hygiene to how to have a less anxious home life to how to de-stress the night before a big test. The evening was filmed in its entirety by Milton Access TV and was aired the two weeks following the talk.

Boston Police Leadership Program
By Julia Falco '12
Fontbonne students in the Boston Police Leadership Program: Liz McGowan '12, Julia Falco '12, Maretta Morovitz ' '13, Flannagh Fitzsimmons '10, pose with fellow participants and students of Boston International High School. Meaghan Cloherty '12 also attended the program.
Five Fontbonne students, including myself, recently attended the Boston Police Leadership Program. Director of the program, Sergeant Michael O'Connor, showed a group of high school students what it is like to be a police officer, and the different opportunities in the world of law enforcement. We sat in on a live court case and spoke with the judge and the lawyers about their jobs, the path they took to where they are now, and the benefits of living out justice every day. We visited the many police units, including the canine unit, the bomb unit, the ID unit, the domestic violence unit, and the harbor unit. At each unit officers described their role in the police force. We also went to the Police Academy where all the police officers are trained.
Although you might suppose that if you are in this program you must aspire to become a police officer, that is not necessarily the case. Many of us who were in the program are interested in sciences involving criminal evidence. We were able to visit the crime lab, watching scientists run tests and use intricate machinery. Seeing these people doing their jobs helped me to realize that this is something I want to do when I get older. I would advise anyone interested in working in law enforcement to go to the Boston Police Leadership Program because there is really a lot you can learn, and it may help you clarify your future interests, as it did for me.
