From the Head of School
Dear Parents and Families,
Recent events in the news give us pause. We learned about a dear girl, a daughter not unlike your own, who was severely bullied and who ultimately thought the only way to stop her suffering was to end her own life. This is a tragedy that speaks loudly to our society; we must find ways to end all types of abusive behavior in and out of school.
We have had the good fortune to engage an author on this topic, Erin Munroe, who will come to Fontbonne in mid-May to speak about how we can all create a safe and comfortable social environment for your daughter and all adolescent girls. Erin is the author of The Anxiety Workbook for Girls and When Big Issues Happen to Little Girls. It is with great pleasure that I invite you to join us on May 12. The event will be open to Fontbonne families and our surrounding community. Depending on the number of people who attend, the event will take place in our auditorium or foyer. Please come and invite your friends and neighbors to come and listen so that we may assume more active roles in helping our young people learn to be proactive for themselves and others.
Fontbonne students are very aware of bullying. They learn about it in their guidance curriculum. Under the sponsorship of Peer Education, Peer Ministry and Friends Regardless, more than fifty students participated in a "Day of Silence" on Thursday, April 15. This annual student-organized day of action to protest bullying and harassment reinforced that Fontbonne Academy is a no hate zone where every person feels safe and respected, regardless of differences. Students who participated represented the silencing of people who have been bullied or harassed for reasons which include, but are not limited to, race, religion, socio-economic status, or sexual orientation. Being silent in solidarity with people who are bullied or harassed was a visual reminder to everyone around them that those who cannot speak or defend themselves are often "unseen and unheard." After the school day, students who participated reflected on their experience and shared what they had learned with the other participants. They said that they had learned first hand what was involved in caring for the "dear neighbor."
May is a busy month filled with endings and beginnings and lots of new life. We say farewell to and celebrate the accomplishments of our Class of 2010-and there is much to celebrate! I hope May is filled with everything your families need as you wind down this school year and ready yourself for summer.
Sincerely,
Mary Ellen Barnes

Monthly Spotlight:
Social Justice Fair Shines Bright
Senior Amy Connelly's Driving With Dignity presentation demonstrates the challenges faced by elderly people driving. Students Deirdre Cahill '12 and Tori Perez '11 wear goggles to experience what impaired vision is like.
On April 1 all Fontbonne Academy seniors showcased the culmination of their work during their Fontbonne career by participating in the 3rd annual Social Justice Fair. Students' passion and dedication to their espoused causes shone brightly in the exhibit halls and in the classrooms where they presented their work. Topics ranged from "Poverty, Education and Minorities" to "Mental Health Care for War Veterans" to "Environmental Racism." The Social Justice Fair is a unique opportunity for students to combine classroom skills such as research, writing, collaboration and presentation with advocacy and action. If you should ever question the good work Fontbonne is doing, you need only attend the fair for proof that each and every student that passes through the halls at Fontbonne Academy has embraced gospel values and is prepared to go out into the world and make a difference.

Sister M. Flavia Library is Dedicated
Select Chorus sang under the guidance of Mrs. Fortier at the Library Dedication.
On April 9 students, parents, alumnae and friends of Fontbonne Academy gathered together to celebrate the contributions of Sister Flavia, our Founding Principal, in a ceremony in the auditorium. The service embraced Fontbonne Academy's past, present and future by including reflections from alumnae who were blessed with knowing Sister Flavia while she was Principal, songs from our Select and Gospel Choir, and a beautiful candle-lighting ceremony representing our revered past, our vibrant present and our promising future. The ceremony was followed by the long-awaited formal library dedication. Many of our alumnae from Sister Flavia's years at Fontbonne were in attendance, and much applause was heard at the unveiling of the plaque which now hangs in the library. We welcome family and friends to come and view this new plaque and to see our new library.

Gospel Choir sang during the ceremony preceeding the Dedication.
Sister Maryann Enright, CSJ led the blessing and dedication of the new Sister M. Flavia Library.
Seniors Amy Connelly (pictured above) and Clarissa Palmer had the honor of sprinkling the plaque with water blessed by Sister Maryann Enright. |

French Exchange Program Begins in June
In June, four juniors will travel with Mrs. A. Herbert to Paris, France to begin Fontbonne's France Exchange Program with St. Louis de Gonzague, a Jesuit high school in the center of Paris. Students from the lycée, more familiarly known as Franklin, will host the group of juniors for 3 weeks. During the visit, Fontbonne students will spend time with families, visit the sights of Paris, and have the opportunity to visit the countryside outside of Paris for a few days. Students participating are Meghan Collins, Katie Crosby, Mary Kate MacKenzie, and Alanna Sparagna. They will benefit from the cultural experience of living with a French family while improving their French. In February 2011, the French students will arrive at Fontbonne to complete the exchange. |
Seniors Attend "Two Angry Moms"
 On
Wednesday, April 13, six seniors attended a screening of "Two Angry Moms" in Hingham. Pictured here left to right are Fontbonne Academy seniors Paige Pasley, Gabriella Musto, Amanda Glennon, Melissa King, Alexandria Zamanian and Kathryn Delger along with John Belber, Education Director of Friends of Holly Hill Farm Cohasset (center). The students and chaperone Mrs. McPhillips received a warm welcome from Mr. Belber and Holly Hill Farm Director, Cindy Prentice. They were excited to see the girls so interested in this topic. The movie, part expose, part "how-to," chronicles the efforts of two moms and other leaders in the healthy food movement as they take on the system nationwide. The film not only showed what is wrong with school food, it offered strategies for overcoming roadblocks and getting healthy, good tasting, real food into cafeterias. The movie explored the roles the federal government, corporate interests, school administration and parents play in feeding our country's school kids. Each of these seniors is entering college with an interest in an education or health-related field. "Our discussion over lunch was a great opportunity for me to see how each of these young women will take what they saw and heard today into their studies and careers in the future," said chaperone and Wellness Director Mrs. McPhillips.

Samantha Curley '11, Jinhui Cheng '11, Amanda Schiller '10, Cara Murphy '11 and Paige Pasley '10 stand in front of the "I Believe In A No Hate Zone" sign.
The Day of Silence at Fontbonne Academy gives our students an opportunity to stand in solidarity with people who experience bullying and harassment. Seventy-eight students deliberately chose to be silent during the school day on Thursday, April 15, to glimpse the silence that many people who experience injustice feel powerless to end. These students could be identified by the button they wore on their uniform or by the card they carried. At the end of the day, the students gathered in the gym to discuss their experiences and to share a meal. They also signed a banner with the words, "I Believe In A No Hate Zone." These words were a part of the Morning Prayer on the Day of Silence to demonstrate that everyone at Fontbonne Academy can feel safe and respected because we replace fear, ignorance and discrimination with love, mercy and compassion. Students were encouraged to "think about the voices you are not hearing today." Jennifer Sinnot '10 and Mackenzie Furash '11 don their buttons that say, "Day of Silence." |
