Congratulations to each of you for the part you play in this extraordinary school!  We have much to celebrate.

Parents Guild
March Update

Parents Guild Meeting
Evening of Stars Chairperson, Terese Robinson P'13 addressed the Parents Guild at the February meeting.

At our winter meeting of the Parents Guild on Tuesday, February 9, Carol Fortier presented a lively description of the Fine Arts program at Fontbonne.  Even the veteran parents gained a better understanding of the breadth and depth of the art and music offerings at Fontbonne.  While many of us have seen the course names and numbers, Ms. Fortier was able to provide a bit more detail into what actually goes on in courses like Music Composition & Technology and the Elements of Theater. We want to thank Ms. Fortier for taking the time to join us.

Evening of Stars Chairperson Terese Robinson gave parents an update on plans for Evening of Stars, the school's primary fundraiser.  She encouraged the forming of tables with parents with whom we enjoy team sports or with parents from the homeroom of our daughter.  Terese also let us know about the many ways parents can still get involved as volunteers.

While the Parents Guild was meeting that evening, several other parents were involved in an admissions event at the other end of the building designed to welcome many of our prospective students.  It was great to see so much active engagement of parents throughout the building.  Thanks to everyone who attended.  If you did not have a chance to attend, please talk to someone who was there and make plans to join us next time.

Lenten Giving Initiative:
 Bringing Fresh Water to
a Village in Uganda

Council on Social Justice

The Council on Social Justice, pictured above, is composed of seniors taking the Social Justice course in Theology.  They will be fundraising throughout Lent to raise money to build wells in Uganda.  Back row (from left to right):  Emily St. John, Jessica McCabe, Sarah Auguste, Katheryn Ahern, Jay Lee, Jacqueline Roman.  Front row:  Kelly Leavitt, Gabriella Kirk, Amanda Vertullo, Devin Woolf, Stephanie Belizaire, Elizabeth Wells, Rachel-Maria Esguerra.  Missing from the photo is council member Donicka Suprice.

The Council on Social Justice has enlisted Fontbonne, as our Lenten Giving Initiative,  to assist in building two wells for our sisters and brothers in the village of Bbanda, Uganda. The village lies 50 miles west of Kampala, Uganda's capital. It is a rural area and the people living there often spend an hour traveling to fetch water from a limited number of inadequate sources. Twenty-liter jerry cans are the most popular method of transporting water, and the villagers must make multiple trips just to have enough for their daily activities of washing, cooking, and drinking. Access to water may be something we take for granted here in New England, but for many people around the world finding safe, clean, drinkable water is a life and death issue.

We hope you'll help us raise the much needed funds for this worthy cause.
Full student participation at a seven dollar level will yield $2,500 which will purchase water pumps for two wells.  Cash and check donations are passed in during homeroom throughout Lent.  Checks can be made out to "Fontbonne Academy."  If you have any questions regarding the effort please contact Director of the Office of Mission and Ministry, Maria Sarte, at 617-615-3041 or msarte@fontbonneacademy.org.

Dear Parents and Families,

As we begin the month of March we are saddened to hear of the passing of another of our founding sisters, Therese Higgins, CSJ.  Sister Therese left us her legacy in the words of our Fontbonne Alma Mater, which she wrote while she was here teaching English. The news of her passing comes on the heels of the passing of our founding Principal, Sister A. Catherine Murphy (formerly Sister Flavia) in late December.  Our community joins the Sisters of Saint Joseph in mourning their loss and celebrating their lives. They along with two others were our trailblazers as they set forth the values that continue to be the foundation of a Fontbonne education: preparing students to be women of courage who grow every day in wisdom and grace.

Connecting the past with the present and future is very important to us at Fontbonne. On March 19 we welcome the extended Fontbonne community to join us for an assembly where we will, through the stories of our first graduates, teach our present students about Fontbonne's beginnings. Following the assembly there will be a formal dedication of our new library in Sister Flavia's name. In attendance will be representatives of the Sisters of St. Joseph, our Board of Trustees, alumnae from the classes of 1958 through 1962 as well as family and friends of Sister Flavia. I invite you to join us for this special celebration.

As we look back at the era when Fontbonne was born, we also look forward.  This past week we were blessed with the news that Fontbonne has officially received continued accreditation by the New England Association of Schools and Colleges (NEASC) for another ten years though 2019.  Their report was filled with positive affirmations of the extraordinary educational program that is being offered at Fontbonne Academy today.

So as we move through March, we honor our rich past and embrace our very promising future.  We delight in and are grateful for the abundance of talent and diversity in our Community of students and adults. Thank you for being an integral part of Fontbonne's present and future.

Peace to you and your families,

Mary Ellen Barnes

Monthly Spotlight:
Mr. Anderson's Music Composition and Technology Class

Class

Mr. Anderson teaches the Music Composition and Technology course which is open to sophomores, juniors, and seniors.  It is a full-credit class where students compose, arrange, and produce original musical works using musical keyboards, voice, and computer.  Starting with the basics of 20th century composition, students create and develop their own music.  No previous musical experience is necessary.

Music Composition and Technology allows students to think creatively "outside the box" and "around the corner."  This creativity is then realized musically and produced using new technologies.  "It is great to see so many students engaged and excited to be creators in this class.  The musical pieces being created are really great," said Mr. Anderson.

Kindergarten Internship for Meaghan Healy '11

Kindergarten Apprenticeship

Meaghan Healy at her Virtual High School (VHS) internship at Glover Elementary School in Milton.  Meaghan is enrolled in a class called Kindergarten Apprenticeship through VHS.

Glover School

Meaghan Healy with Ms. Comer, Glover School Kindergarten teacher.

Meaghan Healy '11 has begun an internship at Glover Elementary School in Milton.  She is in a kindergarten class as part of her spring "Kindergarten Apprenticeship" Virtual High School (VHS) course for 5 weeks.  She will be delivering lessons based on the VHS kindergarten curriculum and assisting kindergarten teacher, Ms. Kim Comer, in the class with students.  "I am really excited to be able to learn first-hand like this.  VHS was such a great option for me, and Glover Elementary School couldn't be more welcoming," said Meaghan.

The Kindergarten Apprenticeship is a unique VHS high school level course, as most course-related internships exist only at the college level. Fontbonne Academy is a leader in offering this option to its students.

Meaghan will have a lot of support as she embarks on this endeavor. She will be working with Ms. Comer and her VHS teacher online.  Fontbonne Academy VHS Site Coordinator, Mrs. Pappafotopoulos, will assist her with any VHS technical issues. "VHS offers a wide range of classes for students who want to expand their curriculum, and we make that very easy at Fontbonne," she added.

Foreign Language Week Activities

Monday, March 1, begins Foreign Language Week.  Activities will include morning prayers in French, Spanish, Latin German and Chinese and two after-school foreign language films, shown in the Language Lab.  Both films have English subtitles and will be shown at 2:15 p.m.

Wednesday, March 3:  French film,  Les Choristes, in which music teacher Clément Mathieu (Gérard Jugnot) lands a job at a boys' boarding school populated by delinquents and orphans--and run by a martinet headmaster (François Berleand). Sensing potential in the rambunctious ruffians, Mathieu forms a choir to rein in his charges through the transforming power of song, even at the probable cost of his career.  (97 minutes).

Thursday, March 4:   Spanish film, Valentin, an enchanting film set in 1960's Argentina of an 8 year old boy who struggles with a difficult family situation.  Through the movie, he is smart and resourceful as he strives to better his life. (83 minutes).

Evening of Stars

Please mark your calendars! The 11th Annual Evening of Stars gala will be Saturday, March 27, at Lombardo's in Randolph.  This is Fontbonne's biggest fundraiser of the year, and we are counting on all families to support this effort.

All parents should have received an invitation to this event.  You may purchase tickets either by returning the response card, buying your tickets online on the Evening of Stars web page or calling Fontbonne at 617-615-3009.    You can also find lots of information on our website about sponsorship, donating an item to our auction, or taking an ad in the Evening of Stars Program Book.  Please email eveningofstars@fontbonneacademy.org if you would like more information or are willing to volunteer to make this event a success.  We look forward to seeing everyone on March 27!

NHS Coffee House

The National Honor Society (NHS) organized this community-building event on February 11 in the foyer to raise money for the earthquake victims in Haiti.  It also served as an opportunity to welcome newly accepted students and give them a taste of the Fontbonne spirit.  The Coffee House featured stellar musical performances by the Instrumental Ensemble and Jazz Choir.  The members of the Creative Writing Workshop inspired us with their original poems and Ms. Farrell wowed the crowd with her own amazing spoken word talent.  Many other members of the community participated in the Open Mic portion of the event.  "It is truly moving to witness students creating for each other a welcoming, supportive environment in which they can showcase their talents.  I am constantly in awe of the dedication and generosity of spirit this community exhibits," said NHS Moderator Ms. Ryan.
