Parents Guild
February Update

Parents Guild Bowling January 2010
Many parents gathered for a fun night out January 23.

A record number of parents attended the Parents Guild Potluck Dinner and Bowling Night on Saturday, January 23, at Cunningham Park Hall in Milton.  It was a great opportunity for parents to catch up with friends, find out what their daughters are up to, and enjoy a fun evening of candlepin bowling.  The evening flew by, with many parents asking if the Parents Guild could host another social event before the end of the school year.  If you have any suggestions for another event (and might even be willing to help plan it!), please email parentsguild@fontbonneacademy.org.

Lenten Giving Initiative:
 Bringing Fresh Water to
a Village in Uganda

Engineers Without Borders

Water Project in Africa

What is Fontbonne Academy doing for Lent this year?

Alumna Christine Abichaker '08 is a second year engineering student at Northeastern University in Boston (NEU).  As a member of the NEU student chapter of Engineers Without Borders (EWB), Christine has enlisted the help of her alma mater to build two wells for our sisters and brothers in the village of Bbanda, Uganda. The village lies 50 miles west of Kampala, Uganda's capital. It is a rural area and the people living there often spend an hour traveling to fetch water from a limited number of inadequate sources. Twenty-liter jerry cans are the most popular method of transporting water, and the villagers must make multiple trips just to have enough for their daily activities of washing, cooking, and drinking. Access to water may be something we take for granted here in New England, but for many people around the world finding safe, clean, drinkable water is a life and death issue.

This year's Council on Social Justice will be working to educate and unite our Fontbonne Academy community to raise both awareness and money in order to allow the EWB-NEU to purchase water pumps, key components of the wells they will build this year.  We pray that the good fountain of Fontbonne Academy may bring life-giving water to our dear neighbors in Africa.  Please join us at our Lenten Prayer Service on Wednesday, February 24, 2010 at 1 p.m. to prepare ourselves for Lent and to learn more about the latest project of EWB-NEU.

Congratulations to the Ice Hockey team who has won the girls Catholic Conference Championship and is headed to the State Tournament. Their record is 9-2-1 at this date. They continue to get stronger as the season progresses.

The Basketball team remains undefeated at 12-0 and is headed to the State Tournament. The Breast Cancer game on January 17 was a huge success raising $730 for the cause.  Thanks to Marshfield High School for participating in this awareness-raising game with us.  Congratulations to Alexis Peters '10 who scored her 1,000th career point at that game!

Congratulations to Shannon Fisk who has state qualified in throwing the shot put for Indoor Track this season.  Additionally, all our runners are improving their times each week!

Dear Parents and Families,

Winter doldrums got you down?  This part of the year can seem gloomy and gray.  With this backdrop, I want to take the opportunity to point out some rather brilliant highlights inside to offset the winter outside.

Each day at Fontbonne is filled with good news, so much that sometimes it is hard to capture all of it.  In an attempt to do so, we have instituted a "Good News" page on the website which is updated weekly.  You will be amazed, as we are everyday, by the accomplishments of our Fontbonne students.  Should there be any Good News that you would like to share that has not been published, I invite you to contact our Communications Manager, Mrs. Karoff, at fkaroff@fontbonneacademy.org.  We would be more than happy to spread your Good News to the wider Fontbonne community.

Recently, I have been amazed by student-driven initiatives and accomplishments.  Immediately after hearing about the disaster in Haiti, students started fund-raising for Medicines for Humanity, an organization already on the ground there since 2002.  In collaboration with the Daughters of Charity, this organization manages the Hospice St. Joseph Maternal Child Health Clinic in the community of Christ Roi.  Our students--your daughters--created a drive for funds, which will include the donations collected during the International Festival to be held this coming weekend.  Our students are helping to work miracles for those suffering in Haiti.

More good news. Two of our students Erin Frawley '10 and Christina Ferrara '11 auditioned and were accepted to the All-State Chorus.  They will participate along with 500 other students from Massachusetts in a performance at Symphony Hall on March 20, 2010.  Ongoing is the extraordinary success of our winter sports teams.  As I write, the basketball team is undefeated (12-0), and the ice hockey team is carrying a strong record (9-2-1).

We have much to be proud of, and I ask that you take some time to stay in touch with the school by reviewing the weekly Good News at www.fontbonneacademy.org.  I also invite you to attend our International Festival this weekend, Sunday, January 31, at 4 p.m. to support the efforts of our students and, most importantly, to help the good people of Haiti.

Finally, please do not forget toregister online for the parent/teacher conferences on February 11.  I look forward to seeing you there.

Sincerely,

Mary Ellen Barnes

Monthly Spotlight:
Ms. Farrell's Creative Writer's Workshop

English teacher Ms. Farrell has launched a new extracurricular program, called the Creative Writer's Workshop.  The newly formed group meets twice per month on Mondays in the auditorium.  It offers students a place on campus to have their voices heard and promotes an understanding of the importance of writing creatively.  It also provides insights on the impact of creative writing on formal writing.

The workshop is essentially a forum where writers gather to read, edit, and critique one another's work. It is not meant to hurt or criticize, but to inspire and help a writer explore her work openly with the help and support of her peers.  The Creative Writer's Workshop fosters student participation in local scholarships, open mics, or creative and analytical writing opportunities. The Creative Writer's Workshop has had strong attendance and is open to new members.  "I am really encouraged by the enthusiastic turnout thus far.  Fontbonne emphasizes formal writing skills and this is an opportunity for students to extend their skills into another genre," states workshop leader Ms. Farrell. "We hope more and more students will come to our Monday meetings."

Don't Miss It!
International Festival
Sunday, January 31 at 4 p.m.

International Festival Clothing

Students wear clothing representing countries around the world at the International Festival.

On Sunday, January 31, at 4:00, the International Club will present the annual International Festival.  This celebration of our many cultures begins with performances in the auditorium which include prayers, songs, dance, a fashion show of traditional costumes, and other entertainment.  After the performances, all are invited to join in sampling international food in the cafeteria.  While this event has always been a powerful way for the Fontbonne community to celebrate our multi-culturalism, this year will be even more special.  Some of the performances will reflect the Haitian culture and the compassion that many feel toward the victims of the devastating earthquake.  Don't miss this special event.  The suggested donation for the performances and the food is $5 per person, and all funds raised will be donated to the Medicines for Humanity, an organization providing much needed health care to impoverished communities of Port-Au-Prince.

Exchange Program Update:
Argentine Students Come to Fontbonne

 Exchange Program
Three students arrived from Argentina as part of our exchange program with the Northlands School.  Pictured here from left to right are:  Kim Henderson, Kathryn Ahern '10, Macarena Staudenmaier, Ann Marie Keane '10, Katie Grant '10 and Sofia Dominguez Barandica.

On Monday, January 19, three students from the Northland School in Buenos Aires, Argentina arrived as part of an exchange program with Fontbonne students.  These three students will attend classes and immerse themselves in our Fontbonne community for three weeks.  They are being hosted by Kathryn Ahern '10, Katie Grant '10, and Ann Marie Keane '10, all of whom travelled to Argentina last summer for four weeks.  These Fontbonne students were reunited with their friends from last summer at the airport and look forward to introducing them to our school.  The Argentine students have enjoyed a warm welcome by many students and adults and have enjoyed participating in many classes.  During their stay, the Argentine students will also visit sights of Boston and receive a tour of the State House.

Evening of Stars

Please mark your calendars! The 11th Annual Evening of Stars gala will be Saturday, March 27, at Lombardo's in Randolph.  This is Fontbonne's biggest fundraiser of the year, and we are counting on all families to support this effort.

Invitations will be mailed this month, but you can buy your tickets on line at the Evening of Stars page of the Fontbonne website.  You can also find lots of information there on sponsorship, donating an item to our auction, or taking an ad in the Evening of Stars Program Book.  Please email eveningofstars@fontbonneacademy.org if you would like more information or are willing to volunteer to make this event a success.  We look forward to seeing everyone on March 27!
